I tried this a couple of years ago and was told the can't change the type of card. After some pushing I got my rate lowered (and promptly increased again about a year later). I'm at £3650 limit atm, but a cashback/reward card would be nice...

I took out my Initial card in 2001. It's been managed quite poorly tbh. Minimum payments only so the balance was coming down extremely slowly.
    2001-2011- £200 limit
    Dec 2012 I cleared a £1200 balance.
Jan 2013 credit limit increased to £3200
Feb - i asked for a product transfer. They said they could not, but ask again in 3 months. Rather odd I thought. Why ask again if they can't do it anyways?
May - I asked to be switch onto the plat simplicity product... thinking my apr would drop to sub 10%, it stay at 29.9% Doh!

At first I wasn't too bothered, as I was paying my balances in full.

Then it dawned on me, that even tho I was doing this, the card offered me no benefit at all. I called BC and basically said I wanted to cancel the card. They reduced my apr to 21.9% and transferred me to their cashback card.

Normal customer services hold very little power, I guess they have a Customer retentions department which can do a lot more.

When did you ask for the upgrade?

I called again today and they still said they don't upgrade inital visa's...

Mine was done in June, so only a few months ago.

i did have the initial card for over a year prior to that, so maybe that makes a difference

Why are people asking for an Upgrade when they can just apply for another Barclaycard.
I have a BC Mastercard & BC Visa card.

I had my initial upgraded to freedom rewards early last month, have had my initial 10 months. Had confirmation email, letter + text but the new card hasn't come through but I suspect they're waiting for the statement date.

I first asked on the online secure messaging who said I could get platinum, cashback or freedom. Then rang and spoke to their pretty terrible customer service agents.

The agent spent 5 minutes telling me their 0% purchases platinum doesn't exist whilst I'm staring at it on their website. Eventually he realised it did after chatting to someone else there but they weren't offering me it without a new app.

Given they're not even aware of their own products, I'm not suprised we're seeing conflicting responses from them.

Edit - in case it helps - I used the "abroad" normal rate number:

"If you would like to transfer your product (Initial Barclaycard) to any of the one's mentioned above then please call us on 0844 811 9111* or + 44 1604 230230* from abroad and we will be happy to help you."

I have a BC Mastercard & BC Visa card.

You can only have one of each; and people would like to take advantage of the offers available for the type of card they have already.
