Barclaycard Upgrade

Hi Guys,

At what point to Barclaycard upgrade from a initial to one of their better products? Do they do it automatically or do you have to contact them?

Obviously keeping your account in good order is essential.

I wanted to upgrade mine today but they told me they can't upgrade inital accounts you need to make a new application for the credit card you want.

Good account conduct and ensuring you don't miss a payment usually after 6 months they are able to upgrade. A few years ago I upgraded to Gold from initial and that was exactly 6 months. I rang up myself to ask for upgrade they even lowered my Apr and increased my limit. I've now got the platinum card with a super low Apr. Hope this helps.

Its coming up to 3 months nearly that i've had it, Im thinking that's why they said no (maybe)

How long ago did you ask for an upgrade?

That's wrong info on their part. My initial was switched to a freedom rewards card, was a quick and painless process. They even advertise this on their website.

Afaik, existing customers can only apply for (either as a switch, or additional card) the freedom or high 5 cashback cards.

I had held my initial card for about seven years when they changed it last year. Prior to that the wanted me to close and reapply to switch, but I complained as I wanted to keep the card as it was a long standing account, so they lowered the APR from 26.9 to 18.9 - so for all intents and purposes, it was just a standard Barclaycard under another name.

I'm sure I remember someone on here saying they got their Initial down to 9.9 and had quite a good credit limit on it. That was one dark horse for sure.

I've had the initial for just over 10 yrs, apr 11.9 and limit is £11k.

Just checked my previous statements and it shows that my initial card was upgraded in Nov 2011. So not that long ago. Wait another 3/4 months and try again. Hope that helps x

mine was upgraded to the cashback card without a problem. I just rang them up and asked for a change. I had my card for awhile before i upgraded thou

When did you ask for the upgrade?

I called again today and they still said they don't upgrade inital visa's...
