I believe that the O2 standard PAYG mobile rates are not too bad in comparison with the standard high street market rates but from what you say it sounds like a good idea to sign up to giffgaff also - can I run both or would I have to switch? - and figure out how to use the 0808 (followed by the correspondent's number??) solution. What I do greatly appreciate from O2 is the web based free texting facility which saves ... ing around with *'s and #'s and things on my basic mobile handset, which just shows my age / lack of dexterity.

You can't have both SIMs in the phone at the same time, but you can still keep the O2 account in order to sign in and send web texts.

Order the GiffGaff SIM as suggested. Sign up using a credit or debit card to 1899 or 18185 and at the same time register your new GiffGaff number on their system.

Once set up, call the 0808 number(you can put it on SpeedDial or in your Contacts) given on the corresponding website and that will give you connect you to the 1899 or 18185 system where you then dial the number to which you wish to connect. Just dial the number(no need to press the green button once you've dialled).
That brings the cost of geographical landline calls down to 1p per minute. Rates to other numbers are indicated on the pages to which that I have direct you.
A 4p connection fee applies to all international calls and 5p to all national calls

That's really helpful and I'll pursue GiffGaff once I get home access to the internet again and assume that it will be evident how to proceed once on their site.

Why not get started now?? Seems that you already have Internet access.

Ok for longer calls, which I suppose might be more common while the home landline is out of commission, but a call of a minute to a landline costs 6 pence, compared to just under or just over a penny being possible.

I'm sure that I replied to this yesterday. Perhaps I neglected to post it..
Indeed the Callback service can be considered, but it's fiddly in that you can't store the numbers in Contacts(with pauses). You have to dial, wait and then dial again.
The other thing was that when I tried the system from Vietnam, the quality wasn't good and kept cutting out. Perhaps it's better now.

Looks like BT OpenReach have got my landline re-connected at last so I'm pondering if GiffGaff is worth it for just the occasional "emergency" call from a mobile, or if continuing with O2 PAYG is as good a solution as any - until some clown pulls the plug in the local telephone exchange again ...
