OP, I doubt there are 'hundreds of thousands' of people with the set of circumstances you find yourself in:
    - don't want to sell current car before buying new one
    - don't have a very good insurance company
    - don't want to use temporary 'day' insurance
    - don't have any off-road parking
    - don't have any friends with off-road parking
    - don't want to do a part-ex
There are lots of solutions, just you don't want them, but there's no extra magic solution going to appear out of nowhere, sorry..
The questions that get the best answers are the questions that give most detail....

I agree with most of the posters on here. My opinion for what it's worth is to add your old vehicle as a 'temporary additional vehicle' onto your current policy until it's sold. Most insurers will do this, for a fee obviously, and if they don't then they are probably one of these new online fly-by-nights who I wouldn't insure my car with anyway ;)

As has already been mentioned your options are limited and in all likelyhood you will have to pay to insure two vehicles at the same time unless it's just for a day or so.
    :)

    I bet there are.

There are around 9 million car purchases (new & used combined) per year in the UK. Even if only half of those people are wanting to get rid of the old car at the same time, that's 4.5m people.

Most of the 'solutions' involve hassle, and most will cost you - either directly, or indirectly in the saleability of your untaxed, SORNed car. At the very least, it'll cost you a favour.

It's a commendable aim - reducing the incidence of uninsured cars on the road - but private motorists are suffering financially for the convenience of the DVLA.

Congratulations if it's not a problem for you, but it is for most of us.

    1) taken out a second policy online, and cancelled it within the cooling off period.
Just remember that cancellation/ arrangement fees can still be levied even if you cancel within the cooling off period & that you cannot mirror the NCD onto this second policy.

It's just another way to get people into dealerships, buying new cars, getting further into debt.

There are much better ways to stop uninsured drivers, the current system is flawed unless it serves another purpose......

No I don't, but once again a very good idea for those who might be able to do that.

Regarding deposit etc, how about this for an idea. Ask the seller to bring the car to your home, and buy it there, then give the seller a lift home.

You should never buy a car that is driven to you. You have no idea how it's like with cold starts, you don't know if the electrics are messed up and the battery drains after a long period of non-use.

Always inspect a used car with a cold start. Very important.

I didn't mean to imply there were huge numbers of people with my set of circumstances. I simply meant there must be large numbers regularly facing the problem of insuring an overlap in a simple and cheap way that doesn't involve changing insurance companies; juggling different policies; seeking help from friends/family; sorning, etc. etc..
Call me tight if you want, but I thoroughly object to paying a not insignificant premium plus an admin charge for a few days insurance.

I think mad_rich, in post #34 above has put the case very clearly.

where did the untaxed SORNed bit come from?
Go to a decent insurance company like most of us.
Go PX it like a lot of people do.
Manage without a car for a few days like some do.
None of this is 'hassle' unless you are of a 'fragile personality' in which case you may be better suited to not drive at all.

so tight that you've saved a few quid on insurance and never thought to consider or ask about adding a second car to the policy when you took it out. For the rest of us it is simple and cheap.
I see there are two of you now! It might be more useful to name your insurance companies so we can all avoid them...

  • You know mgdavid, I came on here to ask advice and sound out opinions, not for myself and others to be the target for your nasty and insulting comments on our common sense and other personal qualities.

My crude but effective solution is to put you on my ignore list. :j

I'll take this opportunity to thank all posters for their interesting ideas. :T
