Which one would you choose? this or this?
It will be used for school runs, shopping trips etc and then for towing a 6 berth caravan, hence the diesel. We want something a little newer than our old car (03). I want to go for the 1.9TDI as belive it a bit more robust than the later 2.0 diesels and it does not have a DPF. I'd rather go for the 130Hp version as it has a bit more power for towing the caravan up hills. It will only be doing only 5-6K a year so milage is not too important but I have a psychological barrier of 100K
The VW Has a full service history however the new clutch at less than 50K worries me. It is quite far from home (1.5 hour drive) which would be a problem if I had to return the car to be fixed.
The ford is cheaper however it has more miles on it and only has a part service history., but is closer to home.

Aren't they the same car?
Up until 2006, the Galaxy was based on the VW Sharan and Seat Alhambra.
Fords own effort is the S-Max.
For the clutch to go by 40k, the car has either a) been driven by an idiot b) used to tow heavy loads OR c) a clocked ex-taxi from an illegal taxi firm.
People carriers are in my opinion a false economy, unless you need 7 seats you should buy a large hatchback or estate.
They have just as much boot space (if not more because of the lack of extra seats), the roof is lower allowing easier access to roof bars/boxes and the lower centre of gravity is better for towing. They're also cheaper and there's a lot more choice out there.
And is diesel really better for towing? or is that just another urban myth?“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

Why did they buy a diesel to do 6,000 miles a year. :wall:0

I tend to agree with you however it is Mrs Myhooose you would have to convince. MPVs make it it much easier for inserting/removing small children in car seats, and we do need 7 seats for Child minding.0 -
Out of the two I would pick the Ford. The fact that the VW has only done 48k for an 8 year old diesel would concern me - most people I speak to say the higher the mileage the better for older cars, especially diesels. Low mileage suggests stop start town driving, which could account for the clutch repair.
I would add though that I used to tow a caravan with a 1.8 petrol Vectra & it never struggled so do you NEED a diesel or would a petrol suffice?0 -

I am looking at diesels over petrol from a performance perspective and not a financial one.
If it weren't for the towing of the caravan the a petrol would be a no brainer, however the Diesels have a better torque curve for towing 1300kg.0 -

The turbo petrol would have been the better buy for them.
BTW check out Seats version of it too.0 -

Ah sorry, makes sense now.:)0 -
Whilst the petrol v diesel towing argument rages on in many a motoring forum, I know people who use petrol cars for towing and the car barely knows it's towing anything. Especially with the 2.5 Volvo 10v, which was specifically designed for towing.
I also know a guy with an old Omega V6 Petrol, which is as fast when towing a caravan as it is without.“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”
