Chinese smartphones? Goophones? Scifone?

Hi, I am just wondering if anyone has used/bougth one of the chinese smartphone equivalents, e.g. shanzhai, goophone, sciphone, etc.

Does anyone have any recommendations or comments? Are they worth the money? Do you get an equally good phone?

Thanks.

Glad you didn't post a link for them, otherwise I would have pressed the spam button rather than reply. Anyways, personally I don't think they are worth the money, as handsets are dropping in price that much the price difference is minimal, but the convenience of having a bonified google approved handset is worth the extra few £££s if there was any price difference in the 1st place.

My uncle had an iPhone knock off. It was the most atrocious thing I've ever used. It looked right design-wise, but the screen was TERRIBLE and the operating system was buggy, awful and seemed like it had been designed by a blind squirrel...

I was given a Sciphone. It was the biggest piece of junk I ever tried. The grandkids played with it until it stopped working 3 weeks later! A false economy, made down to a price.

By all accounts some of the Chinese smartphones are as good as or better than the brands we're used to here.

JiaYu and Oppo are two that spring to mind

However, finding a trustworthy importer who'll sell you one with English firmware is a different matter entirely.
  • maybe you can try. i am Chinese girl, and i have been used a domestic smartphone, feel great. you just need to pay relatively a little money for a high performance phone.
  • When you can pick up a Google Nexus 4 with full warranty and guaranteed updates for £159 why would anyone risk importing a Chinese smartphone? I just don't get it..
  • Hi,
My cousin had a Chinese smartphone.
First disappointment was it arrived in different color than ordered. Not such a big deal, really, but then the performance of the device was a bit frustrating. It wouldn't connect to wifi, would lose signal every now and then and completely stopped working after only 3 months of use. Sadly I don't remember the brand, but wouldn't recommend a Chinese phone

Thanks SO much Millicent. I had not heard of this and could not afford the iphone. I will DEFINITELY be ordering a google nexus 4.

Do you recommend getting the 16gb or do you think 8 is enough?

Get a 16GB phone, the OS takes up some room and a bit of music/apps will take up the rest quickly.
