& plumbers mait is the biggest load of crap to ever have been invented, it won't seal taps on a basin, it lets everything stick to it, once it gets wet it won't stick & leaks, harbours loads of baterial, like i said it's complete crap & if that's the way you do it then time to change your name

but i do agree with throwing away the plastic nut & using a brass one

How does it let everything stick to it? when its less than 1mm thick and trimmed back. Maybe you have been using it incorrectly?

As for plumbers mait - well - it does have its uses but for me using it to bed down taps in a modern installation is just, well, neanderthal. But each to his own and if plumb wants to do it that way its no skin off my nose.

    Cheers

i'LL tell you what is neanderthal, using putty and paint and lead washers to bed taps. But it will they will never leak or loosen for 20yrs.
Pry tell which is your prefered method?

I haven't been using it incorrectly because i don't use it at all, you won't find any in my van

it is a non-setting compound so it remains just as sticky as when it came out the tub, it's very much like blu-tack or plastercine (spelling i know before someone picks me up on it) & as everyone knows those two will attract hair, dirt, germs, hardly the kind of things you want in a clean bathroom emviroment
I'm only here while I wait for Corrie to start.

You get no BS from me & if I think you are wrong I WILL tell you.

Ya i agree, if you use loads of it. But a very small ring of it set inside the edge of the taps, will compress to microns think when tightened, so nothing there to stick to. So i think you are talking tosh, but each to their own.
  • I think we will have to agree to disagree, however there is a very good reason why taps come with rubber sealing washers & not a tub of plumbers mait

Because rubber washer cost £0.001 to make, and you cant fit a tub of plumbers mait in the tap box :rotfl:

    arc welding!

    What?

    Oh!

Sorry - so it was a serious question after all. Do the bloody backnut up properly if the tap body has an O ring in it.

    Cheers

Told you - arc welding. Very satisfying but you have to be careful not to crack the porcelain.

Is this going to be a five minute argument or the full half hour?
