hi
I have never drilled into a tile before so wanted to ask what sort of drill bit do i need to use? I have a 12V black and decker drill (quite useless to be honest!) with following accessory set. I also have a SDS plus drill (where i can switch off hammer action) with few masonary drills.

You need a tile drill bit.

(You can get cheaper, this is just an example.)
Stick a bit of duct tape over the spot to help stop the drill bit from slipping when you first start to drill.Herman - MP for all!0 -
A decent sharp masonry drill will probably do it unless you are drilling into ceramic tiles when you will need the glass drill. No hammer action of course. You scullion! You rampallian! You fustilarian! I’ll tickle your catastrophe (Henry IV part 2)0

To add to the tape idea,I always use a masonry nail and just lightly tap it onto the centre of the hole,I find this stops the drill bit from skidding.Don't use a hammer action or you will end up with cracked tiles and make sure you know where pipe and cable runs are!!0

Please please please don't do this.0 -
Use a Bosch Multi-purpose drill bit (as an example) - never fails.
And masking tape is sufficient, don't 'centrepunch' with todays technology

I usually use a nail/hammer to chip the glaze away before using a normal masonry bit0

I've been using a diamond tipped one.Non me fac calcitrare tuum culi0

the first question everyone should have asked is what kind of tiles are there ie what are they made of ?
using a nail & hammer to chip the glaze, I've heard it all now :rotfl:I'm only here while I wait for Corrie to start.
You get no BS from me & if I think you are wrong I WILL tell you.0 -
Actually a very very small indentation using a sharp instrument just to pierce the glaze on a glazed tile is very useful to ensure accurate drilling and avoid faffing about with tape but it needs to be done carefully. Anyway I've never broken a tile doing it. Agree with using masonry bits rather than tile bits BUT use a small diameter one first and gradually build up to the hole size required in two/three steps.

silly me but the tiles are ceramic ones (they are very glossy so i am assuming they are ceramic) on kitchen walls. i know to turn off the hammer action when drilling through tiles but what about the wall behind the tile. after the drill has gone through the 3/4 mm of tile do i switch on the hammer action back for drilling through wall?0
