Which is ridiculous just so we're clear. The law doesnt specify this, but it is upto every individul retailer etc to deny service for any reason.
But its harder to get a provisional than a full!
Don't shoot the messenger;)
I agree it's ridiculous that a provisional driving licence isn't always accepted, but my children's experiences (youngest now 23) showed that to be the case. I'm just warning so that the OP doesn't fork out for one if her son doesn't need it to learn to drive in the expectation that it will work. It might not.. . .I did not speak out
Then they came for me
And there was no one left
To speak out for me..

I second provisional licence, never had a problem with it personally (tough the odd bar might-but most shops accept it)..it's somewhat cheaper than a passportThis is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0

Our local Tesco doesn't accept provisional licences.
My son came home laughing one day because a woman refused his 18 year old mate's ID as it was only a provisional. She asked did any of them have a full licence so my son handed his over and she served them. Only problem was he was only 17 :A14 Projects in 2014 - in memory of Soulie - 2/140 -

That really is ridiculous, should've just pointed this out to the manager on the next visit.0 -

Yikes that's way bad. Even if one of them does have acceptable ID the whole group need to present acceptable ID (and be 18+) to be served. Doesn't sound like that store is very hot on their age restricted training :eek:0 -
I think one reason for provisional licences not being accepted is because they are not photo ID (or certainly didn't use to be).0

They are and have been for the 12 years I've held mine. I'm not sure why they're not considered by everyone, but my own personal thought would be if you can use it to board a domestic flight you should be able to use it as ID.
(also didn't know cigarettes were up from 16 - mostly because I neither work in a shop that sells them nor do I smoke myself)Retired member - fed up with the general tone of the place.0 -

I think it depends on the person serving. I was behind someone the other day who didn't have ID and they refused to serve him. He looked shocked and said "I'm 33 love":rotfl:
I do agree though, even if my son had been over 18 they should all have been asked for ID. As it turned out my son was the only one under 18 (youngest in his class) and was driving so wasn't drinking.14 Projects in 2014 - in memory of Soulie - 2/140
