    Dacia's

The old models had horrendous depreciation

It should be a issue to consider?

There's not many dpf /egr issues reported with Kia diesels from what I can tell, hard to find any bad reports.

Mrs Iceweasels's cousin has a Dacia Duster.

We went on a day trip with the relatives - not impressed.

    Far too basic and uncomfortable.

I could only tolerate one of these things for short local journeys.

Very plasticky and noisy too. I'm not saying they are 'shoddy' - not at all - but they are lacking any real quality - both in materials and build quality.

In my opinion Dacias are made for an Eastern European market and are priced accordingly.

There are plenty people in the UK for whom the price is more important than the quality and the Dacia satisfies that need.

If that suits you then buy one.

DAcia is Renault's low-cost brand....don't be surprised if other makers follow suit [the supermarkets have proved the concept already]...I suspect Nissan's recent announcement resurrecting the Datsun brand may follow suit?

However, like more mainstream makes, I feel much will depend on whereabouts in the world the product will be manufactured?

Dacia {Renault] have the SAndero range built in Eastern Europe.

AFAIK, the entire Duster range is made in India.

As has been noted in Honest John, there have been issues reported concerning quality control of products made in India [and not just cars,either]...the Indian factory has struggled to meet demand the world over for the Duster..and quality control has apparently slipped somewhat.

If it were my choice, I would avoid the Duster, until Renault have sorted out their Indian manufacturer.

However [since my tastes are not swayed by the average bucketful of bling associated with most mainstream cars]...I would put my money into the Sandero range...especially the Stepway.

The Sandero range appear to not have issues of quality...the East European factories have worked to meet the huge demand for the SAndero without loss of quality.

Probably in percentage terms, but in actual pound notes high depreciation on a low cost car can be at acceptable levels.

If a £6,000 car loses a 'horrendous' 80% over three years it has cost £4,800. A £50k car can lose that as soon as it is registered, yet residual over 3 years may be 35% to make it somehow look a good buy.

Major front suspension and front brake problems within the first 2 years, exhausts don't even last 3 years. Chocolate transmissions develop issues under 15K miles. Rust starts to appear under the bonnet and on suspension components within the first 2 years. Seat frames last under 3 years, need new tensioner pulleys every 20K miles, frequent power steering failures.

In Germany 34% of them fail their first MOT (3 year old).

    SAndero? Or Duster?

Actually, sounds remarkably like a Ford Fiesta to me?

    Or Mondeo?

certainly BMW engines cannot stand overt punishment without failure....

And Mercedes suffered a real issue with quality when they transferred manufacture to the Indian Subcontinent...

DAcia Sandero is a solid, low-cost , honest product.

Which is why it sells so well across Europe.

Because the buying public are fed up with the continual rip-off that exists with all other manufacturers and their products..simples!

I'm wondering where you are getting your information, Golfbravo, perhaps you could enlighten us?

I am seriously considering a Duster at the moment as I would like our second car to be a load lugger and a high ride - and price wise there is nothing to match it in the lower trim levels, or if you want a 4x4. I would be going for low trim level because I won't do enough miles for diesel - and 9k is unbeatable. I tried a Zafira but there was no power in the 1.6, whereas the 1.6 Duster was reasonably nippy. I drove the diesel, it was a whole different experience but one I didn't particularly like, but then I'm not used to a diesel to be fair.

Personally at the higher trim levels ie 13k for 2x4 I'd be looking elsewhere because the quality control just isn't there, for one thing, and that's just too much money to take a punt on. Spare parts are also currently a joke.

Another thing to bear in mind - it's got 3 Euroncap stars. It's not as bad as it looks initially, when you look at the occupant results, but protection is not as good as the Sportage, and the more miles you do, the more likely you are to be in a bang, especially motorway miles.

As you said initially, it's not a bad car for the money. But I wouldn't put it in the same room as a Kia. There's a big price difference for a reason.

I thought the Stepway was ok but I didn't like the petrol turbo.

Technischer Überwachungs-Verein - German Technical Inspection Association, car manufacturer quarterly extended report (subscription required) for 2010 Sandero.

No Dacia Duster reports available at this stage (not enough sample data, TÜV need at least 500 samples for their quarterly report).
