Car insurance claims - how to fill in the application

Options
Hi

I'm renewing my car insurance and am disappointed (but not surprised) to see that my premium has gone up 40% with my current provider. My girlfriend, who lives with me and is insured on my car, had an at fault accident earlier this year and had to claim on the insurance (or rather the person she crashed into claimed on their insurance, there was minimal damage to our car). When I fill in the claims history with a provider, they ask for claims that I have made in the last 5 years and separately claims that any named driver has made in the last 5 years. Should I list the claim
a) Under me only (there is then an option to specify who was driving when the accident took place)
b) Under her only
c) Duplicate it so that I list it twice

My understanding is that the answer is (a) as the claim was on my insurance. Is that correct?

The difference in price between the three is (c) is the most expensive, followed closely by (a) and (b) is much cheaper.

I believe it's either A or C. B would be if she'd made the claim on her own policy.

The best thing to do would be to ask the company who you're applying for insurance with, as claims history is a material fact and getting it wrong could result in a cancelled policy, which is something that you definitely don't want to happen.

Also, you may be better posting things like this in the Insurance forum in future, as you'll probably get more answers there.

No, you didn't have an accident and you shouldn't show yourself as having one. There will be a quite separate box showing the named driver (GF) as having a claim against them.

Are you sure about that? From what I understand of the OP, the claim was on his insurance, but caused by a named driver. Therefore, I'd imagine that it would be recorded as a claim against him, as he is the policyholder.

Still, I'd highly recommend asking the insurer as the consequences of getting this wrong can be very serious.
  • NewFolder is right. The insurance is in my name, my GF is a named driver. She had the accident, but it is recorded on my insurance policy. That is why I think that (a) only is OK, but only because there is an option to specify under (a) who was driving, otherwise I think it would be (a) and (c).

I will check with the insurers, but I was hoping for a generic answer so that I can compare like with like using an aggregator. Thanks for the replies and the suggestion of the other forum in the future. All appreciated

Always check with the insurer in question BEFORE buying

In normal circumstances when you are still insuring the pair of you you declare it once and under her name. If you remove her from the policy you then have to declare it under your name. She must declare it under her name for every policy she is named on.
