I will sort out the money, and he can use my car,but that's not the point. In my case I am fortunate enough to do that, but his point what if he could not rely on his parents.

Surely the system should get him over that period, and then he can pay it back.Job grant(£100) was in place to do that, but was stopped by the government.

It's a finite pot of money, so why not leave it for those who genuinely have no family to help them and no other means to start their job other than the grant.

Why do people have to try and grab every last penny of the free money that's thrown at them?

Its not free money, its a entitlement. My son over his working period would of paid in more than he as taken out. This applies to everyone, not just those lucky enough to have parents. There is no system in place to help those moving from benefit into full time work.

I have never claimed a penny in over 40 plus working years, yet I have paid taxes over the whole period.I did ask that very question, what if he did not have us,they said they may be able to provide food vouchers, how does that get someone to and from work.

The point is the system as nothing in place to help someone who finds a job,and unfortunately does not have the luxury of a transport system to get them from A to B.Its not about freebies or handouts its about a interest free loan until they get that first pay packet.

Provident - they will loan you money - it can be a high interest rate but if you pay it back with a few months its hardly anything - I recommend them 100%

They will send an agent round to discuss how much you want etc - you can have the money within the week and then they call round every week to collect

Ideal for 1 off's or emergencies

You can google them - but as a new user I'm not allowed to post links - but they are at Provident.co.uk

PS sorry about the user name - not quiet sure how I change it

But it's not entitlement since no such payment exists anymore.

There are, of course, exceptions but people do seem to look for problems where none exist.

As someone else said, JSA is paid 2 weeks in arrears. So two weeks after that is when money would be "missed" and the chances are there's another payment of up to two weeks as well.

That will take care of all weekly paid employees and about half monthly paid people as one doesn't generally start work on the first day of a pay period.

Some employers have a payroll deadline but that doesn't stop them paying something outwith the usual system.

Of course the system is too inflexible - paying Housing Benefit run on to someone going into a job that pays a couple of thousand ££ or more every month and pays them within the first couple of weeks, while not helping someone who would still have their last benefit but it won't cover their travel to work costs.

Or paying a grant (for something not needed because it was something already owned from their last job) because bonus target points were on offer on the off chance someone got a job on the one hand while not helping someone else with something they don't have.

But really, just how many people don't have a credit card to use; have a zero bank balance; can't borrow from someone; can't use an overdraft or some other loan - after all, they're now working and better placed to repay; can't get an advance (more likely haven't asked about it) etc

It's got to be very few.

And if you're normally monthly paid, finishing work with a month's pay but getting JSA from an earlier date than if you'd carried on working....well it would be wise to make sure you keep some cash for times such as starting work.

It was better up to 1988 when people qualified for payments between last benefit and first wage (by right, not a loan) AND got a grant reflecting the travel to work costs until payday.
