TugaGirl, These ones sound like they could be silverfish.

As Vicki says, these are probably silverfish: -

They're harmless so nothing to worry about. They like the damp and feed off the cellulose from shampoos and shaving cream so the best way to get rid of them is to open your bathroom window and rinse sinks and baths thoroughly after use, as well as not keeping any cardboard packaging lying around.

If they're really causing you a problem you can pay for someone to put down a residual insecticide but this is really only for extreme cases.
  • Yes, that’s what they are. They look horrible.
So, is the only way to get rid of them to get someone in?
Unfortunately I live in a small flat, and there is no windows at all in my bathroom.

perhaps you can get hold of a dehumidifier for free or quite cheaply off freecycle or gumtree?
What matters most is how well you walk through the fire

Ah I quite like silver fish - when you open a cupboard and they shimmy off! It's like having living glitter. Anyways!! Just clean everything thoroughly and become militant about it! They are known to live in houses that are somewhat messy such as student houses (I hope that's not an insult as tbh, my house is grotty in places and we have mice!). They are not too hard to get rid of and you don't need to get someone in.

  • Hi Jamgirl, they sound definitely like woodworm to me, please get someone to check it out straight away - it could be a few in an old piece of furniture, but it could be lots in your joists or floorboards, which can be very bad news. If it is a small localised infestation you can treat it yourself with woodworm killing liquid (buy online) but if it is a lot, you may have to have timbers cut out and other areas treated. Sorry, but you need to check it out, or they can do lots more damage. Ask around to see if there is a small local timber treatment firm someone can recommend, Rentokil and similar big names are very expensive. Good luck!

Just to highlight this post was added to a very old post, from 2007, so it's likely jamgirl has had her question answered now.

Ant Powder does get rid of silverfish if you want rid of them.
One day I might be more organised...........
