First time claiming jobseekers - can it be done in advance?

Hi,

I'm a recent graduate (summer 2012) who's worked pretty much continously since. I decided to leave my current place of work recently, and finished yesterday. I've been seeking work these last couple of weeks, with no success as of yet, and was looking to claim JSA today to help me through the next couple of weeks. Trouble is, im going abroad tomorrow (not so much a holiday, my father lives abroad, so go see him for a week every year or so) and therefore am hesitant to claim before I go. The reason I'd want to, however, is not that I want money for a time I won't be in a country, but just I'm aware that the time from applying, and receiving your first allowance can take time. So the question is:

Is it sensible to claim now, or is it not allowed?

Is there a way of claiming now, but notifying JSA that I'd be away for this period (until the 2nd Sep to be precise). So that I won't be claiming money for this week, but just getting my application in so that payments can start once im back?

Any help will be appreciated.

If you left your job voluntarily, you're likely to be sanctioned for a period anyway, up to 26 weeks.

Where I live you can only make a claim for JSA online. There it says that they will contact you in two working days to attend an interview.

You had better ring your Job Centre Plus and find out their procedure.

I agree with the above posters. If you voluntarily left your job without good reason then you are likely to be sanctioned.

You can't do what you want to do.

When you claim you need to attend the JC
If you leave the country, even temporarily, the claim is closed. and you have to make a new claim when you return.

The answer is no, you will have to leave it until you return.

If you have access to a computer while away then you can do your claim online the day before you return :)

You can claim in advance but you would need to do so by telephone

But there's no point doing an advanced claim from when he returns because it will be a week or so in advance and they will just send him a claim-form which may or may not be on his doormat when he returns and it would therefore be quicker to do it online when he returns

    Dookar,

I was wondering where that post was you replied to a few weeks back when this guy was saying he was required for JSA to attend the JC once a fortnight and once randomly when the JC wrote to him/called him and you told him to look up some chapter in the DMG.

I know someone (new claim, never claimed before, educated professional) who is required to attend every week to sign on from the start of the claim... and they have been given a 21 point checklist that they must do every week, so much for the "3 job seeking actions per week" this person has 21 things to do every week!

    Was it this thread?

Frequency of attendance isn't necessarily covered in the legislation, providing the requirement to attend is notified in such a way to satisfy reg 23 then it's compulsory.

Oh, and I agree about the advance claim thing other than the important action is to notify an intention to claim. Doing so before the holiday might provide some breathing space upon return
