fitting our own carpets?

  • Its in bedrooms so actually it won't really matter that much if it is a bit less than perfect.

Although I wouldn't want to do it while looking after a couple of toddlers.

In your own words ......don't f*ck up

As I maintain looks like we are breeding a generation that would rather not ....... f*ck up than try ..... bunch of loser's.

I very often take my untrained skill to a £400 carpet, just not worth the hassle.

Will give you a list of much harder /riskier tasks.
    1) laying vinyl

Looks like we are now breeding a generation that refuses to learn/attempt DIY

DH and I do loads of DIY...me more in a sort of cheering on, holding things and reading instructions out of the huge book when things go wrong type help, but we wouldn't bother trying to fit a carpet because a poor job looks SO bad even on expensive carpet , where as a good job makes even cheap carpet look ok.

We would sand the floors ourselves though, and as that's the finish op actually wants maybe money and time might be better put to seeing how their original technique could be improved...a better use of DIY skills maybe?

Carpet fitters are a ten a penny as it is just about a self taught skill.
Of all trades they are the cheapest by far due to the low skill level involved.
I would contact a few, you may be surprised how little they are prepared to work for as work is in very short supply.
    Be happy...;)

What an absolute load of rubbish.

Carpet fitting is an apprenticed trade and isn't something you can learn by yourself. What about whipping or over seaming? Cutting kite son stairs?

And near me, I tried to get a carpet fitter a couple of month ago. All those I contacted had no availability for 3 to 4 weeks.

So evidently the award for 'Original Bullshi££ing Man' stays with you this week.

I paid £30 a few weeks ago to have my stairs and top landing fitted. I would have paid double that tbh, it's not something I would tackle myself.

Me and dh are both pretty good DIY'ers (just about to complete our new kitchen!), but I would always pay for a carpet fitter.

Two guys took about 20 mins to fit it all and it looks great. Well worth the money spent x
Can't think of anything smart to put here...

I must take down the name and address of your charm school. :)

I've done quite a lot of jobs on my house including hanging doors, and tiling a floor, as it is so hard to get good trades. Some jobs I don't do, including plastering and carpets.

That said, I have a join in the hall carpet. I was told it would be hard to see. It can be seen from miles away.
