I keep randomly getting BSoD errors, 0xBE being one, but I'll update when I get another as I believe I get different ones too. This particular one refers to a problem with win32k.sys.
I have extensively googled this and nothing has come up that works. I tried to download the windows memory diagnostic tool as the last error was reported as a ram error, but it will not write to a cd and I don't have a floppy drive.
I also got an error last night telling me shutdown was initiated by NT Authority/Systems. I googled this too and I find lots of sites referring to this as a W32 Worm, maybe Blaster or Sasser (?) but I've run AVG Spyware, AVG AntiVirus, McAfee Stinger, Spybot Search and Destroy, Symantec Blaster Removal Tool, Fixblast, and a couple of online things I can't remember the names of! My (limited) understanding is that this is a DoS attack on Windows Update initiated on the 15th of the month dating back years. I also restored back to beginning of last month, but that hasn't helped either. As directed by many sites, my system restore is currently switched off and file sharing is disabled.
I run AVG Antivirus automatically every morning and it's updated automatically, Windows updates are also automatic and none are available as it's up to date.
I'm running XP media SP2 on a Dell Dimension 9200 from a netgear WPNT824 wireless router. I only have the windows firewall active at the moment so I shall sort that out soon, but I need to get to the route of this problem!
This has been happening on and off for about 3 weeks (hence the restore) and it's getting more and more frequent. When the shutdown countdown starts, I can roll the clock back to give me more time to find the problem and I know to stop the shutdown using shutdown -a if rolling the clock back isn't possible.
I understand that Dell machines have a restore to factory settings built in using a function key on startup. This is a last ditch resort but I'll give it a go if someone can tell me if it will help (I don't want to lose everything for nothing)!
As I say, it happens randomly. Last night it died as I was backing up Media Centre to DVD. Just now, I was only running Firefox and OE and wasn't downloading. NT Authority error was whilst running extra AVG scan last night. I can't see anything in the processes running that jumps out as suspicious, but then again I'm not terribly knowledgable!
Is there anyone out there who can help me please? I have no idea what to try now.
TIA

If you run stinger make sure system restore is off and after the scan re-enable system restore.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310405
Then run sfc /scannow as that may fix some errors

Ok - over half way through scannow, BSoD reappeared quoting STOP 0X0000007F and wittering about a physical memory dump

Also, when running scannow, it prompts for XP disk, which I don't have as XP was loaded on machine when I got it. I've looked through all my paperwork and cannot find a disk there so not sure how to proceed with this."A cat can have kittens in the oven, but that don't make them biscuits." - Mary Cooper

So is this on the PC your using to type this or on another PC?
As you should only run any program and close all other windows and also just let the scan do its own thing leave the pc alone and dont run both scans at the same time.0 -
It is the pc I am typing on! Only running one scan at a time and logging back in here when there is a problem - it's asking for the XP disk again that I don't have
Do you have any suggestions to get round this please?
Thank you

First of all dont log back in or anything like that, go back to the desktop just like the PC has first started up then turn off restore then run stinger and after scan turn restore back on.
Now when all thats done run scannow and if your prompted for the disc youll need to borrow and XP disc and you may need one with SP2 built in, call the PC supplier (try to get it free) and ask them for a disc if not borrow one.0 -
I searched through piles of paperwork and found the reinstallation cd with sp2 and used that. I've run stinger and scannow now and switched restore back on. I've had no shutdowns or stops, but then I only finished 5 mins ago!
What should I do next? Just wait for a fault or is there sth else in the meantime?
