Nail files and razors are OK but why not just have them in your wash bag and when security have checked your liquids bag put them all together

Thank you, yes I understand what you mean, but as we're just going for a long weekend, obviously watching the weight limit, if my husband and I have a plastic bag each and could put in nail file, razor, soap etc as well we could probably do without the usual wash bag?
The important things in life are not things ........

It should be fine, I've just not seen it done before
You could just put the razors etc. into another plastic bag?

I've been stopped and subjected to extra search due to contact lenses showing up a couple of times. Mine are the daily disposables so probably the liquid in the individual containers.

I put my contact lenses in the clear bag, never had a problem with it on easyjet, ryanair or jet 2. Flew jet 2 and ryanair recently, have also flown ba and flybe, never had any issues, which is just as well as I cant see a thing without my lenses in.

It is one of those 'it varies' questions. Strictly speaking, the plastic bag is for liquids, however most UK airports will allow you to put the aforementioned items in the same bag. I do the same when I travel. I have only been asked to remove them once - I think it was at Birmingham but cannot be 100%.

Note that it is not the airline that does the security search - the airport employ/ contract the security staff, and decide how stringently they interpret the national rules.

This is correct. The rules are written by DfT and security staff are not employed by any airline, but by the airport itself.

You can put a razor (as long as it's a safety razor, no loose blades) and nail file in your hand luggage, but I recommend that your nail file is the cardboard version.

To save space in your liquids bag, you can take a solid deodorant and solid soap as these don't count as a liquid. Any bottles/jars over 100ml will be confiscated, even if only half full.

Definitely, I've had a metal nail file confiscated and safety pins.

I think you're going to have to be extra careful if you're ONLY taking hand luggage. If you're taking hold luggage as well then pack your liquids/gels/pastes etc in there to be on the safe side.

Metal nail files and scissors are fine in hand luggage as long as they are under 6cm

Is 6cm the length of the blade or overall length?

6cm is tiny (for a nail file), slightly less than 2.5".

I usually take one of the new glass nail files in hand luggage.
