Can anyone recommend a basic, but good quality mobile?

Hi,

I currently have a Samsung E720 mobile phone. It looks nice, has a camera, an mp3 player, etc... but the voice quality (on both ends of the line) is absolutely terrible. Very muffled/robotic, and often breaks up. The signal strength also seems rather poor. Other people on the same network (Orange) seem to get signals in places I cannot. All in all, it's a nightmare...

So, can anyone recommend a phone with really good voice quality?
I am not bothered if it is a basic phone. I don't need a camera, mp3 player, etc - just a good quality phone, with decent signal strength & battery life - and for a reasonable price. Contract or pay-as-you-go, I'm not too fussed.

Also, what network is generally considered the best, signal wise? I have only ever used Orange.

Many thanks,
x

You can't go wrong with the Nokia 6300, have a look here. It is an excellent phone, just read the reviews!

As for signal strength, I advise you to try a few networks , maybe borrow a friends mobile or stick in some free sims into an unlocked handset, to see which is best for you.

Great, thanks. I'll check that out.

I don't have an un-locked handset, and have no idea where to get "free" sims, but I'll ask around my friends to see what networks they are on.

    Cheers!

Have a look here for free sims.

Also have a look at the Ofcom sitefinder here. Click the map on right then enter your postcode and click search. Once thats done click on the blue triangles, these are the masts and they will tell you which company use them(orange/o2 etc)

  • Like yourself, I needed a simple mobile without a camera etc.
I've just bought this Motorola W220 and I am delighted with it. No frills (multimedia & FM radio about all) but clear sound, easy to use and above all brilliant battery life.
Very cheap from Carphone warehouse but if you do get a PAYG from here then you may have to chase the airtime voucher. Here is their web page

Thanks to both of you for your kind advice. I checked out both phones..

Nokia 6300 certainly does seem like an impressive & popular choice! By all accounts it oozes quality. However, I couldn't find it cheap enough on PAYG, and there seemed to be some concerns about battery life.

So in the end I went for the Motorola W220 - just nipped down to CW this lunchtime & bought one. £25, + £10 Orange Airtime = £35 in total.

All I need to do now is transfer my number from my horrible Samsun E720 (Pay Monthly on Orange) to my new Motorola W220 (PAYG on Orange). I'm hoping that will go smoothly & then I'll be a happy bunny.

What did you mean by "chase the airtime voucher" ? Sorry, I'm having slight trouble with some of the terminology around here! ;)

I asked about the £10 Airtime, and they pointed to a voucher number on my receipt. They said I have to ring up, quote this number, and I will get my £10.

  • I ordered the phone from their web site since Carphone stores are miles away from me. They are supposed to register the airtime voucher "within 8 days" but after 3 weeks and 3 calls to chase them up still nothing. I ended up having the credit posted to a CFW account and had to go to the store to get a voucher anyway!
Still chuffed with the phone though.
