Hard to tell - I know people living in Longsight and Gorton who swear they're safe areas but I wouldn't choose to live there. Have a look at http://www.ukcrimestats.com/Police_Force/Greater_Manchester_Police which gives breakdowns by area.
There seems to be a problem with the neighbourhood stats from Jan 2013 - it seems some areas only have stats up to Jan 2013 but others have stats up to April 2013. If you look at the areas with stats up to April 2013, they all show a massive jump in Feb 2013. This can't possibly be correct - I think the numbers from Feb must include the neighbouring areas for which there aren't stats yet.

Eg have a look at Bury South, which has a relatively low crime rate, running in the low 100's from 2010 up till Jan 2013, suddenly increases to well over 600 in Feb 2013! No way can this possibly be correct.

So suggest you ignore any stats past Jan 2013.

I can think of many better places to move to than Manchester.

Iv been to Manchester a few times, it's a great City, However, I would not live there as the crime rate is still high and you can live cheaper elsewhere.

Why not move to a Town? or somewhere near a City.
The crime rate in Manchester is only slightly above the national average, and a lot lower than London.

It's lower in places like Cheshire but that has to be weighed against extra cost and commuting.

I hear what you are saying but from my personal perspective when I think of Gunchester I think of people throwing hand grenades and the Moss side Estate.

Again, Manchester has some good points, great nightlife, music and culture.

    Better towns to live in.

    Gunchester?

Dear me, we are living in the late 90's aren't we.

Manchester is a lovely place to live, without the nastiness of London and its surrounding areas. And Moss Side isn't that bad, I feel safe as houses round there, you keep yourself to yourself and you get no trouble.

If the OP puts their budget, then perhaps we can suggest areas.

Better towns to live in ?

no idea where you live drbraindead , and incase you really are ......
Manchester is not a town, its a city and no worse and a lot better than some other city's in this country. wherever you live you will always get good and bad areas

you can not compare London with Manchester they are different in many ways ,

OP if you like London you will love Manchester , and as others have said some of the outer towns with easy commute are very nice places to live, it depends what you are looking for, do you have a family ? are you a single ? are you a student ? all these have influence on where is the best place for you to live

    all the best ,

Ive walked through moss side at 3am - drunk... i survived to tell the tale lol.

If you go to the scummy parts then yes your going to have scummy neighbours and probably come into contact with drugs and weapons (not contact as in touch, but contact as in your going to see an incident at some point or another).

But the general rule of thumb is leave them to it. If you leave them to it then theyre going to ignore you.

Ive been drinking in town (manchester) for 11 years. Ive never been involved in 1 fight, ive only ever been offered drugs twice and never once had an issue.

Manchester isnt bad, you just keep out of the way of the idiots and they keep out of your way. More often than not those shooting/stabbing or hand grenades are rival gangs killing eachother... is that really a bad thing? One less prat to live with.

I am looking for the safest area where my family can live without getting burgled or mugged while walking on the roads. Along with some shops and transport nearby. Basically it should be suitable for a person who doesn't drive too.

Chirp, whereabouts in London do you currently live? :)
What is good/bad about the area.
That might also give some insight into what you are looking for
  • It depends on what kind of job you are doing and what type of facilities you are looking for your family.
    Thanks
