Manchester

In general is it advisable to move from London to Manchester? Which are the areas near Withington which are safe for families to live in?

Depends- why are you thinking of moving? Do you have work lined up or would it be speculative?

The crime rate in Manchester is lower than than London, the cost of living is lower especially housing, there is countryside in easier reach - so I'd say yes (I made the move a couple of decades ago!).

Withington is a very studenty area, though quite nice (or was when I lived there briefly 20+ years ago). Though I'd look at somewhere further out eg Cheadle/Gatley.

But doesn't Gatley have quite a high crime rate? Which is basically the safest area?

Hard to tell - I know people living in Longsight and Gorton who swear they're safe areas but I wouldn't choose to live there. Have a look at http://www.ukcrimestats.com/Police_Force/Greater_Manchester_Police which gives breakdowns by area.

I used to live in Burnage, its gone downhill a little bit since i left but its not too bad you could also look at places like Heaton Mersey, Heaton Moor, Didsbury, Cheadle Hulme isnt bad.

Then there are places like Sale, Altrincham, Urmston which are in Trafford.

Withington is a strange one, its not too bad of an area but i think houses get targetted there because its in a student area... students have Ipads, laptops, iphones etc etc.

It really depends on your budget and what type of property you want.

I moved away from here when my son was 2 as I didn't want to raise him there. You couldn't pay me enough to go back.

Didsbury is a good family area but a lot more expensive.
Life is not the way it’s supposed to be. It’s the way it is. The way you cope with it is what makes the difference.
  • Is it advisable to move from London to Manchester?

Manchester is far cheaper for property and everyday living. It has some nice areas (though not sure Withington would count - Chorlton maybe?). It has some fab facilities - Royal Exchange Theatre, Bridgewater Hall.

But you will find it feels very small after London. You can walk across the whole centre in 20 mins. And there isn't the wide choice of activities that London offers. Day to day culture is different - imagine eating your main mean at 5.30! A car is much more of a necessity than in London.

Ultimately, its all about what you want and why you want it. I, personally, wouldn't go back to London if my life depended on it.

Either you havnt seen what manchester has to offer or London is out of this world.

You can Shop, you can drink, places to eat from nice little local pubs to michelin starred restaurants, museums - from the football museum to more cultural things, parks with events on, mini festivals, theres even a beach!!!, rivers/canals to go for a walk or a bike ride down, countryside within a 15 minute drive, you can Ski... yes Ski! indoor sky diving, lego land, concert/gig venues from world wide known artists to local artists.... the list is endless.

It is smaller than london that goes without saying, but you will probably find thats not a bad thing as your not missing out on anything but its also a lot more "local" people do tend to be friendlier up north and Manchester is no exception.

  • I can think of many better places to move to than Manchester.

Iv been to Manchester a few times, it's a great City, However, I would not live there as the crime rate is still high and you can live cheaper elsewhere.

Why not move to a Town? or somewhere near a City.
