I would beef up the home and car security but not hide the keys or put them in a safe. At least then if they do manage to get into the house or car, hopefully they will just take the car. If the keys are hidden, it's possible they will threaten your father, or worse, to reveal their whereabouts.
I'd agree with this. My view is that if somone makes the effort to break into my house to steal my car keys that I'd prefer that they find them by the door, rather than decide to wake me and the wife up to "ask" us where they are.0 -

I'm not so sure I would go so far as putting the keys in a safe TBH, in fact I wouldn't put them in a bedside table. It's 'only' a car, better they find the keys without having to resort to violence because they're locked away. A car is replaceable, your father's life and health isn't.
