Indian wedding outfit. Help!

Hi all. Hoping for some advice re what to buy for an Indian wedding. Showed my friend a couple of dressy dresses I've got who said yeah they'll be great for the evening and just said people really dress up and there'll be lots of sparkly things and colour.

I don't want to spend a fortune, and don't want to wear an actual sari. I'm a curvy busty size 18 so can't wear something low cut for it cos others would get away with it but I'll just look inappropriate. Don't mind something quite Indian-ish, but would prefer trousers on bottom maybe under a sort of dress or glitzy top

Any ideas or suggestions?

Thanks!

  • The only hindu wedding I went to was when an English friend married her Indian husband. She wore a cocktail dress to the registry office but the most beautiful sari for the reception. There were lots of non-Indian women at the wedding and everyone wore what they would normally have worn at a non-hindu reception.

If you'll be happy wearing trousers with a glitzy, spangly top then wear them.

Remember to wear trousers with an elasticated waistband because the food is likely to be utterly fantastic!

How about a salwar kameez, trouser and long top/dress outfit? Some are absolutely beautiful. If you live near somewhere that has a large Asian community they're not even outrageously expensive.

    This sort of thing

I went to a Sikh wedding and wore salwar kameez - loose fitting trousers with a long tunic top and a scarf. I got mine online from a company called Utsav and it wasn't too expensive, even with postage. (Just to add, this was a couple of years ago but my experience with the company then was fine).

    Agree with this!

I've never been to an Indian wedding, but i did attend an anniversary party a few months ago.

I wore a smart dress with some nice jewellery and a clutch.

Other people there who weren't wearing a sari wore dresses, or black trousers with a smart top.

Make sure you bring your dancing shoes!

I recently went to a Bollywood ball and lots of people were in salwar kamize. Look online at a company called Rupali. I got a sari from them for £20. Their clothes are gorgeous and the jewellery is really cheap too and looks lovely. Delivery is super fast .

Thanks all. That's exactly the sort of outfit I was thinking of but didn't know the name. Was just going to wear normal wedding attire but my friend's not even sure if anyone non-Indian is going, although I'm sure there must be. On mobile so not easy to look properly so will check out websites when near a computer. Will definitely get some dancing shoes cos I've been told I'll be 'screwing-in lightbulbs' by the end of the night!

    Thanks all, much appreciated!

Definitely! I'm not a trousers fan but mine have a drawstring waist and they're so comfortable ... and the tunic hides a multitude of sins. Add to that the fact that they come in such gorgeous colours and are so pretty and sparkly. It took me ages to choose just one for the wedding :)

It's also great that they come with a scarf, which I needed to cover my head during the ceremony in the temple.

I would definitely go for a salwar kameez. You can get different cuts/styles to suit everyone and they are lovely to wear. If you get one that isn't too blingy and is in a more western cut you can also mix and match it with western clothes so you can wear it in future. If you have an Asian area anywhere near you do try and get there as you can buy lovely accessories so cheaply.
