My only computer is 6 years old and recently it froze duringt start up before it got to the window start up screen. It was OK on the third attempt. I am thinking of another computer but as I have some old software which only works with XP. I have heard that windows 8 is not that good so I thought of win 7 pro which can run old progammes.
Is this a good idea and where can I get one with win7 pro.

backup, and consider factory restore assuming you can reinstall the software.

Doesn't make sense to replace a six year old computer with a seven year old one.
Processing power is poor. A modern Celeron will out-class that old Intel Core2 Duo T5500.0 -

Cheapest modern machine with Windows 7 and a 12 month warranty is this Asus X54C-RS01 for £193.94
Has Pro installed...you just can't see it on first glance.
Can't imagine that it will run anything graphic intensive in XP Mode. Depends on what the OP has in mind.

Windows 7 and 8 are largely the same operating underneath (as is Vista) so anything that won't run on Windows 8 likely won't run under 7 either. There is also free third party software that can make Windows 8 more similar to Windows 7 by adding a start menu back in which is worth bearing in mind as there's a lot more new Windows 8 machines on the market than Windows 7.

There is the relatively poor Toshiba Satellite C660-2E1 in desperate need of a 4GB RAM module, for the same £193.94.
Medion Akoya E6227 2GB RAM £199.99
Medion Akoya E6227 4GB RAM £229.99
Medion Akoya E6227 8GB RAM £249.99
• Intel Celeron B815 dual core processor (1.6 GHz)
• 15.6” widescreen LED-Backlit display – 1366 x 768 HD resolution
• 320 GB hard drive + 2 GB/4 GB/8 GB RAM DDR3 memory
• Dolby Advanced Audio v2 certified High Definition Audio with two integrated speakers
• Latest USB 3.0 and Bluetooth 4.0 technologies
• Multi-standard DVD/CD Re-Writer optical drive
• Multi TouchPad and MEDION Solid Keyboard
• HDMI Output
Of course one can add a £25 4GB module to the £199.99 machine to take it to 6GB RAM for £225.0
