The relevant information can be found at the Your Europe website.
The EU directive isn't in place in the UK, we have SoGA which replaces it it offers more rights than the directive. Instead of two years the UK get six years (five in Scotland) to claim for an item. In either case it doesn't mean that the item has to last two/five/six years only that you have that length of time to claim against the retailer for a fault present at the time of purchase or lack of durability.
ETA: Apologies for posting what has already been said, I didn't see the second page of replies on my phone0 -
How coincidental that a new user called "Your Europe" signs up to promote a website called Your Europe, and then another new user signs up just to comment how good that site is.. despite the incorrect information being on it.
I have marked the post by Your Europe as spam.0 -
Righto, off to the Apple store, wish me luck!0

Ok everyone, guess what? A no quibble new iPhone! The 'genius' told me 'good news, its a hardware problem, and as it is under two yearsand you bought it straight from Apple, we will replace it'. And they did; tHe whole process took 5 minutes and I am mightily pleased. On the returned phone, they wrote 'consumer law' on the box and filed it away, interesting, huh?
Now, I know what you're thinking; that genius was no genius. She was wrong about the 2 year warranty, but I think she's been trained (wrongly) on the EU thing, don't you?
Anyway, now on my third iPhone, £530 out (i'm including train tickets for returns/repairs in that!) and hoping THIS iphone doesn't start playing unlike the last two. I will be much more confident that if it does, if it is under two years I probably won't have an argument from Apple about replacing it...
Thank you for all your help and support everyone!0 -

I would guess to simplify things, Apple training will be to give above and beyond service and replace within 2 years if challenged.
Great news, Apple are usually more than fair, glad you got the outcome you wanted0 -
Well, you won't believe it, but this phone has developed EXACTLY the same fault. So back to apple i have to go, another 2 hours on the train and another tenner. Disgraceful, I shan't be buyng another.
I am SO annoyed....0 -

Could it possibly be something that you are doing that causes these failures?
One failure... ok.
Two failures... what is common between the two?
The user... just something worth thinking about... that's all I'm saying.0
