Rapport advice

I use internet banking and, following prompts from bank, downloaded Rapport to my PC.

Now using Macbook Pro, and being prompted to download Rapport to this machine.

Can you please advise whether i should allow this download? Currently have no other anti-virus on Macbook, as advised they can do more harm than good.

Thank you for your help.

On this forum there's some quite heavy scepticism about the use of Trusteer Rapport, some* finding it causes more trouble than its allegedly worth, with slowdowns, crashes and the like. Other people find it acceptable - usually those with more-powerful-than-average PCs.

Personally, I have spurned the blandishments of my bank, asking me to download Rapport.

    * see, for example, this thread ...
  • I had it and it was okay for awhile , then my computer slowed down took ages to boot etc and after reading posts on the forum uninstalled it, computers back to normal now.

Thanks very much for replying. Hadn't seen the previous thread.

There were never any issues downloading Rapport on my PC, although it had slowed considerably recently. Not sure what the cause was. Probably a build up of junk, etc.

Just concerned about downloading this programme to Macbook, and in the event of my internet banking becoming compromised, whether the bank or building society would possibly blame the fact that I don't have Rapport on this machine.

    Thank you

OH downloaded it, PC slowed to a crawl, monitoring showed Rapport using huge amounts of RAM, uninstalled it, and things returned to normal.

I wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole.

I've always avoided it assuming it's just some money-making scam the banks and Trusteer have cooked up between themselves.

No prompts on Linux by the way, presumably because they don't make a version of their wretched product to run on that platform!

If you take appropriate care (antivirus or internet security software) and "practise safe internet access", I wouldn't think you'd have much of a problem. Think how effective the banks have been in taking care of your/our money, and not promoting scams like PPI, CPP, and so on. You're right - not at all! "Physician, heal thyself."

I don't think the banks could argue against you in that way since Rapport isn't available for all platforms.

    Thanks John Grey, totally agree!

And it's we savers who are paying the price, with savings interest rates which hardly reach the rate of inflation!

    However, that's another thread .............. :D

Not really my banks (two of) say "Oh be careful about internet fraud etc. download Rapport to to make you are safe..."
    1) They don't know whether you are using it or not, and if they do then it is as much use as a chocolate teapot because it is telling them that you are and they should not know what you are doing.
    2) I use Linux so it's not available
    3) Apparently it is a keylogger, and a resource hog. (I personally haven't checked that out just hearsay)

The bank of England set interest rates in the UK, and to my knowledge have never sold PPI or CPP. So John Grey is incorrect, as are you.
