As above you have to cancel the policy BEFORE you cancel the direct debit.

If you just cancel the direct debit a whole host of issues crop up.

The old company dont know you want to cancel so they renew the policy, Then still take the money or find they cannot and cancel the policy and charge you anyway. Debt collectors etc etc...

New company say your no claims is not valid because its still in use on your other policy. Price is now ££££ more. Pay now please.. If you dont then cancelled and debt collectors again...

Cancelled policies are a PITA when future renewals come up. Declare that and the list of companies that quote drops drastically.
The ones that will quote may want £££ extra.

Or.... you don't cancel the DD before you cancel the policy and they then try and debit a £50 cancellation charge to your account.

There is no problem cancelling the DD before you cancel the policy as long as you cancel the policy before the due date.

Don't forget that companies process a DD BEFORE the payment is due, and they could take a payment even though you have cancelled the policy. That has happened to plenty of people.

Ok so just to clarify if I leave this current one and re insure with another company that's ok? What about the DD do I just cancel it?

You will also have to return the new insurance certificate if your old company sent you a new one.

Instruct the new company to start the policy just as the current one ends. Inform your current insurer that you will not be renewing with them, and request proof of no claims, as your new insurer may request it. And as you said, cancel the DD with the old company.

nightmare yes it does say it will automatically be renewed. Looks like I may have to pay a £50 cancellation fee but its not worded very clearly. Also because ive moved im guessing they will hammer me on that too? Unless I get the docs sent to my old address then they wont know?

    Who is your current insurer?

If you have five days of insurance left, you can cancel up to the middle of next week. Ring them up and tell them you do not want to renew. You will not have to pay a £50 cancellation fee if you are not renewing (if they try and tell you you have, tell them to get lost). Cancel your DD just before you call and cancel.

    Or

Ring your current insurance company and tell them you have a better quote and ask if they can beat it, which is what I did this year (and they did).

I tried that, but Admiral didn't even seem interested in trying to beat the quote from my new insurer.

    Not very clever.
