Can i just change insurer?

In the past I have insured my car and when the time to renew it has come round I have tended to change to a different company as it is cheaper. I have only just had my paperwork through for my current insurer as knew I wasn't going to carry on with them so left it to go to my old address. On the back it says cancellation period..is this something I have to do as only have 5 days before it ends? or can I just move to another company? Worrying now as the premium is pretty high.
Thanks

You can change insurer, but you had better do it quickly otherwise the policy will automatically renew and then you will other problems if you are paying by DD.0

Ive got a new quote online but its not due until the 30-8..do I just cancel my DD for the old one?0

I've just done my insurance for my grandaprents as they dont have a computer and it turns out their current insurance is cheaper but instead of it automatically renewing you had to phone up to renew, so if you did nothing you would be without insurance.
This was home insurance though, might be different for car insurance.0 -
Ok so just to clarify if I leave this current one and re insure with another company that's ok? What about the DD do I just cancel it?0

Cancelling the DD does not cancel the policy.
Ring your old insurer up asap just in case you are on an auto-renew policy otherwise you will encounter cancellation and admin charges.
Nobody in their right mind should ever just cancel a DD.0 -
Grr I thought they were all the same, never have I had to cancel one before. they are shut now until Tuesday which is leaving it too late..
How do I know if its an auto renewal one?0 -
Look at the letter. It should tell you if they are going to renew it automatically or if it is going to run out and they want you to call them to renew.0

nightmare yes it does say it will automatically be renewed. Looks like I may have to pay a £50 cancellation fee but its not worded very clearly. Also because ive moved im guessing they will hammer me on that too? Unless I get the docs sent to my old address then they wont know?0

If you have five days of insurance left, you can cancel up to the middle of next week. Ring them up and tell them you do not want to renew. You will not have to pay a £50 cancellation fee if you are not renewing (if they try and tell you you have, tell them to get lost). Cancel your DD just before you call and cancel.
Or
Ring your current insurance company and tell them you have a better quote and ask if they can beat it, which is what I did this year (and they did)."There are not enough superlatives in the English language to describe a 'Princess Coronation' locomotive in full cry. We shall never see their like again". O S Nock0 -

If you genuinely have 5 days left you should have no problems if you ring on Tuesday.
You will only get charged if you cancel on or after the renewal date.0
