Having lived outside my home country for 10+ years and counting (in various European countries), I know where you're coming from. Although, I find when I go home, after a week of being there I'm itching to leave again--daily life there starts to drive me crazy and I'm reminded why I left in the first place!
Would second the other poster who mentioned an extended visit home. If you're there and it feels more right than wrong, then it's time to move.
I had a similar experience as you describe with your niece. All the kids in the family had no idea who I was when I'd reappear for a yearly visit in December. However, once they got to be 5 and onwards and developed some memory skills, all that was sorted. It was painful though, when they were 2-3 and looked at me like a stranger.
Would also suggest to float some CVs out on job sites in your home country--the universe sometimes points you toward the right path.0 -
I moved to the USA in 2011 from my home country of UK, where I'd lived for 40+ years. This month I moved back to the UK.
I won't go into the reasons why I left the UK in the first place, but I'll tell you why I came back.
My life in the USA was idyllic - apartment by the beach, sunshine (nearly) every day, cheap cost of living. And I love the USA and the people.
BUT. The UK is my home. It's where my family and friends are. And, I think, to an extent, it's also where a large part of me belongs.
As you get older, I think you appreciate more the long-term relationships that you have, and the family that you have - I know I certainly do.
The UK isn't perfect, but it's where I grew up, made friends, and became who I am. I'm really glad to be back.0 -

unfortunately not an option due to the huge cost of moving back and then possibly moving back to UK it would financially cripple us and would feel awful asking my OH to leave his job he loved to then come back to the same place in UK with not a lot of work in his fielduk_american wrote: »Would second the other poster who mentioned an extended visit home.
