Advice and/or suggestions re: Jordan or Morocco

Myself and a friend have been planning a trip to Egypt for November (nothing booked) but given all the recent problems - have now decided it's not going to be an option so looking at alternatives for the same period.

My friend has suggested Jordan - but given it's location I'm still not keen.

I have suggested Morocco.

Just wondered if anyone on here could offer any thoughts, comments or suggestions - for or against either place?

Thanks in advance. :)

  • Jordan would be nice, can't really comment anymore as I don't really know much about the place even though I would like to go sometime.

Morocco is nice, been twice before but only every gone on a package holiday there.

I would do Morocco, or Tunisia.
  • We had a tour of Morocco two years ago and loved it, such a different culture
  • Only ever been to Marrakech in Morocco, and although beautiful 4 or 5 days is enough to get the most out of it, including a day trip up the Atlas mountains.

Definitely not to be missed if you're going to Morocco - if you're wanting a longer holiday, it could be combined with another location/city in Morocco.

Can't comment on Jordan, but would love to go.

hi partner & i went to morrocco in 2011. We visited agadir for ten days & loved it. Our hotel was riu tikida right on the beach, other friends have gone but views have differed depending on hotel. The big market is facinating & people friendly & polite. Haven't been to Jordan so I'm afraid can't cimment

  • I went to Jordan last year, and absolutely loved it. Brilliant history and beautiful scenery in the deserts. I went with a tour company though, not independently. Although I think it's supposedly the safest country in the middle east, if you do feel uneasy then I also recommend Morocco, a few days in Marrakech, couple of nights in the mountains then a week in Agadir was our itinerary a couple of years ago.

Agadir is ok as a beach resort. It just doesn't have anything to give it any "wow" factor.
I found Hammamet in Tunisia a much more authentic Arab experience.(and half the price for eating out etc)
If you want burger n chips then theres also Hammamet Jasamine which is a purpose made resort

Flew in and out of Marrakesh 5 years ago.
Stayed in a traditional B&B just inside the Medina, a few minutes walk from the main square, Jemaa el Fna...

Marrakesh is in your face from the word go, and you either love it or loathe it. All your senses will be tested, and a lot of the entertainment after dusk in Jemaa el Fna isn't just put on for tourists. Some of it is very interesting!

We stayed for 5 nights, and mainly enjoyed it. You need to keep your wits about you, especially when spending your money, so it's best to do a bit of research beforehand on Trip Advisor, Lonely Planet and Rough Guide. The people who fall foul are usually those who don't do any homework.

Then we moved on by train to Casablanca. Don't be fooled by the romantic name, as it's a dump. It's got the massive mosque, and a few nice restaurants, but 2 nights was two nights too long.

Moved on again by train to Fes. Loved it...

We stayed at the old British Consulate, which was a favourite with Mr Churchill.

The Medina and souqs in the old town really test all your senses, more so than Marrakesh.

On our way back to Marrakesh we went to Rabat [the Capital], on the coast. It's very Colonial French, and a quite relaxed sort of place....

Thanks everyone for taking the time to post. So far it seems that Morocco seems to be the most popular.
    Food for thought.... ;)

I'd only go to Jordan as part of a tour just in case the Syria war starts . You can go to Morocco independently easily enough. Marrakesh is a must and while there sit in a bar overlooking Djema el Fna square from just before dusk til night and watch the square come alive. Essouira on the coast is another essential place to visit in Morocco

Would argue that Morrocco is more common as there are many more operators that offer it than Jordan.

Jordan is an amazing place, arguably is worth going to purely for Petra but has a lot more to offer too.
