Scammed by car seller

Options
Hi I bought a car off autotrader last month, the seller gave me the tax disc which I checked over that it was valid and had the registration.... I have now received a letter saying that the cheque that was used to pay for the tax disc has bounced and now I owe £121. Is there anything I can do or do I admit I have been scammed

You need to pay for your tax firstly, you may wish to contact the seller to see if they will give you the funds as this has been an honest oversight on their part but I suspect Bob Hope will be your answer. Good luck.

Strange as they would usually wait for the funds to clear before issuing the disc, at 1st I thought perhaps the seller may have had a replacement disc and then applied for a refund of the current disc, leaving your car without a valid VED disc.

That's what I can't understand ?? Why would they give a tax disc with no payment? Just a cheque? It's just an easy way for people to get more money for cars and let the cheque bounce xx

If you tax your car at the Post Office and pay by cheque, you get the disc there and then, they don't wait for it to clear.
Now free from the incompetence of vodafail

Doubt it, seems a lot of agro for little gain, in the past I wouldn't sell a car with the tax, so that the new owner has to register the car etc.
Seems an odd practice as he could easily get a request to sorn the car or have it taxed.
Where was the car advertised? Isn't the publisher partly liable for the advert?

You mean you offered the asking price? :o
My Mum had 10 of us, so I couldn't agree that expecting loses cells, and of course ya need a man to make babies, so I'm pushing the mitigating circumstances to one side.

Check with autotrader as if the car was advertised with valid VED then it should include it, I know adverts in the paper the publisher is or was jointly liable. Not sure why the DVLA is not chasing the previous keepr though.
  • Surely the DVLA/Post Office need to go after the seller as it was their cheque that bounced.

DVLA are good at accusing anyone before being proven guilty. Just like with the whole SORN notifications not turning up etc malarkey.
