re-logging off problem

Hi Guys, got a problem lately with logging off.
I shut down as per normal, BUT, it tells me it,s logging off, but, doesn,t, so I short cut it, and press on/off button, which I don,t like doing.
Then , obviously , I get bios, start window normally.? Yes, then ok, it logs on ok.
Any ideas as to why it should suddenly decide to take forever, to log off.?
Any help appreciated.
PS; I,ve done all usual scans, Malwarebytes, Spybot,Avast, etc, all clean. CCleaner,cleared all browser history, cache.

Just a slight possibility but are there any Windows Updates sitting there waiting for your instruction to install them? This has often prevented my wife's laptop from shutting down properly on a few occasions.... What was second link, ? Is there a fix in there somewhere? It,s for booting not logging off, or am I missing something.? It doesn,t say how to do it, just asks for feed back.?
I have Vista.
No windows updates pending;0 -
chkdsk was to be performed before clean booting it - not a possible fix on its own.
It's all on the page.What is a "clean boot"?
To help troubleshoot error messages and other issues, you can start Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8 by using a minimal set of drivers and startup programs. This kind of startup is known as a "clean boot." A clean boot helps eliminate software conflicts.
It'll help determine whether third party software is the reason for the failure to log off/shutdown properly.0 -
I did checkdisk, before cleanboot, as It will not tell me how to do cleanboot, even when I click on asking how?chkdsk was to be performed before clean booting it - not a possible fix on its own.

Now I am missing a lot of items from my tray., as it said I would. Do they come back on thier own, or, do I have to re-enable them.?0 -
Oops, sorry waddler, got it wrong.After i did cleanboot, it now will restart, but minus the items I had on my tray,( several), so presume it,s one of them that,s the problem is it ?Hi, Done the clean boot, BUT, obviously, it wouldn,t restart, as it wouldn,t shut down, the problem.so used on/off again;
