In your opinion which is the best spot on flea treatment for cats please?. I'm getting bitten to death here with cat fleas and the cats have been treated with Frontline last month and Effipro which was cheaper this month.
I've got some Staykill on order for the house and have sprayed it with 2 cans of generic flea/ant treatment from a hardware shop yesterday and today. I've also ordered some Advantage Flea Treatment. I dont want to go through this again as my legs were itching like hell yesterday!
I've also disinfected and sprayed the cats sleeping areas and given them new jumpers for their baskets.
Has anybody got any opinion which is best Advantage or Stronghold?.

Just be careful not to overdose by using so many products in a short space of time. Don't apply anything else to the cats for at least another month. You don't say what product you used in the house so can't say whether this will be effective or not or whether it's advisable to use anything else on top of it.

It takes time to eradicate a flea infestation as there will be various life stages of fleas in your home from egg, to larvae, to pupae before emerging as an adult. At the pupal stage they can remain dormant for many months. Heat and/or vibration usually awakens them, hence why people see more when they switch on central heating or move into an unoccupied home that has previously housed cats or dogs.

I recommend stronghold, but get some household stuff from the vet.

I've used indorex household spray from the vet, was about £15, but was worth it.

This was after hang lots of shop bought household spray which did nothing.
Stronghold in conjunction with indorex should work.

Although agree with other posts that you mustn't put anything else on cats for a month.

When using the indorex Hoover first as apparently this brings the fleas to the surface then spray. Also repeat in a few weeks, for the fleas that hatch.
  • The package has arrived today, the cats can have the Stronghold in a month or thereabouts. I've sprayed the house with some generic flea stuff that was £2.50 and also some Staykill which was £12.50.This works I know as I've had it before.
I've done the whole house now and washed all the bedding, mine and the cats etc. I hope thats it as its driving me mad.Thanks.
If the Staykill doesnt work I will go to the vets .

And if you can keep the cats still for long enough, it wouldn't hurt to go over them with a flea comb as well.
  • I do that everyday and theres nothing to see, nothing in the comb apart from hair and with one dandruff! No black specks.

That's because the fleas don't actually live on animals. They live in your home. The Staykill should work. It's an old product and wouldn't be my first choice (Acclaim or Indorex are better) but it's certainly better than the supermarket stuff you bought.

  • I havent had to do the house for ages and thats the only one I remembered that worked. How are the others you mentioned better? In what way?

Acclaim is the best stuff that i have found for the house, and advantage is the best for the cat :)

I normally treat the cat and then spray the house. I then hoover every day, and spray the house 3 days later. I continue to hoover everyday for another week.

They offer a full 12mths protection in your home afterwards. I can't remember whether Staykill does too. We stopped selling it over 20yrs ago along with Nuvan Top as it contained organophosphates. They're both made by the same company.
