Car Crash
Options
My daughters car was involved in a crash, for which the other driver took full responsibility. Her car is a write off, she bought her Peugeot 206 Verve in August 2012 and it's an 06 reg. The other drivers insurance company have offered her £2645.00, the car cost £2990.00 when purchased and only had 38500 miles on clock. Is this a fair amount for the car, we have been looking on web and we are finding that cars with 06 reg and a lower mileage are way out of that price range. We were wondering if she can ask for more money for the inconvenience of having to shop around and trying to find a suitable car for her needs. We are quite angry at this because if the other driver had been paying attention and driving within the law she would not have been put in this position and would still be in possession of her car. She seems to be the one having to do all the leg work for something which was totally not her fault. CAN ANYONE ENLIGHTEN ME PLEASE?.

You can probably ask for more but the insurance companies tend to take an average price for the vehicle at present rather than the price you paid for it.
It's not much help the below link is for 206's between 2250 and 2500 (you can change the values in the address to alter the prices if you want) and there seems to be a good range if you're willing to travel (a hassle I know but better then getting a worse car than the one you're replacing):

So from Aug 12 to Aug 13 they are saying the car has lost only £345 of value? Doesnt sound so bad to me.
A quick look on Glass free valuation states: Private sale price from £2,020.00 to £2,690.00 (assuming its the 3door 1.4l petrol)
Inconvenience is a separate matter and can be a separate head of claim - though typically you are looking at it being lumped in with miscellaneous expenses for a token £20 or so.0 -
You're entitled to the market retail price of the car so don't look at private ads for comparisons, look for what you'd pay from a dealer.0

Take consolation in the fact is was French and there was probably a huge repair bill lurking around the next corner. (sarcastic, but unfortunately true)
As for insurance, try for more, it's been said to never accept the first offer. But the only people that win in insurance claims are the claims management companies and the insurers themselves.“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

Its an offer for a reason. You can haggle them to a degree.
Find some reasonable like for like ads locally and ask for a similar value. You will probably need to send them the evidence. They may not go all the way but should increase the offer.
The problem is they take an nationwide average and usually the lower end of a range. Like houses, prices vary across the country usually more expensive the further south you get or closer to a big city.Comping Since Sept2013Wins so far - Chips, Billy the lion.:j Thanks to all Comping OPs :j:beer:0 -
Seems a bit low to me.
Recently had our car written off by someone else and his insurance co were pretty good to deal with. 15min phone call and we settled on £800 above valuation because insurance company were having difficulty getting many comparisons for the same type, model etc.
Of course a lot will depend upon the insurance company you are dealing with. Some are worse than others for trying to lower their payout.0 -
Here's a trade seller doing a lower mileage one for £2195.

The other difference is you are dealing with the TPI not your own insurers so have no protection of the FOS etc. There may be some room for negotiation but at the end of the day you cannot do the usual threat of going to the FOS which costs them ~£500 to get an increase of something slightly under the fee0

Had a 2nd look and the front bumper looks 'off', the grill is the wrong colour and the front rubber skirt has been painted? I wouldn't touch that with a barge pole.0 -

Lol, no. And I looked for it.:o
There are a few others on AT at the sort of price the OP is being offered though.
