However, looking around to save money I notice their cover 8 including an annual boiler service for £114 a year (£50 excess). I took this cover out but decided to cancel after reading feedback. When I called they offered me £40 via cheque if I decided to stay making the policy £74 - which is exceptional value when you consider it includes a service.

Have they upped their game or are they 'desperate' for business due to seemingly bad service?

After their Misselling scandal... they shut down most of the selling operations.... note you can only sign up online and not over the phone.... as a result fo this, they have lost a lot of business.... so this is desperation.

They also do call handling for a lot of other company's policies. So if you choose company X over Homeserve (or even leave Homeserve for company X after bad service), there's a good chance you'll end up phoning them anyway if you have a problem.
