If only it were as easy as it sounds. No I did not sell the item on either. I have had stuff in the past where it has been months going by and again someones wife had died in one case so no that is not the case here.
Basically the item was picked up, the buyers says it was not him but so much time has gone by we cannot recollect who what where when if you see what I mean in terms of when it went.

It would have helped if you'd told us that in the OP!

How did you give them the collection details? Surely they responded to agree to the time/ date?

What is the item in question - is it high value? What was their reason for (apparently) not arranging collection earlier?

The reason for 6 months and about a year is that I think it was just under 7 months later the buyer actually replied. Obviously someone has the goods, he says he never picked them up, I definitely don't have them. Then it was sort of left until recently.

Collection details...address, contact number etc were given the day after the auction finished. He replied to say he would be in touch. That was it really until 7 months later.

So he (or someone) turned up unannounced?

It is difficult to give any advice when you are drip feeding the story.

Someone else collected it- he never bothered to contact you again, exactly how does he explain that?

Hi there I sold goods on ebay to someone and gave them contact details to pick up etc the day after the auction finished.

Nothing happened until half a year later they called out of the blue. I don't have the items and they want a refund and are threatening to use the small claims court. It it actually now nearly a year since the item was old originally.

The first post implies that you sold item and gave details but never heard from the buyer

The later post implies you sold the item and someone came and picked it up....and then 6+ months later the buyer calls to say that it was not him?

Did either of you leave feedback on ebay at the time?

OK Sorry for the drip feed I did not want to overload info and this is the 1st time I have done this. Basically:
Item sold (ebay) day later I email address & contact No. He replies will sort collection.
Item picked up at some point here...
7 months later he contacts me wanting to pick up item. obviously I don't have it as it was collected.
There was a few emails as I then had to try to find out what may have happened.
Now it is nearly a year. He responded to emails slowly hence the time passing again.
Now I know people have been scammed before and this could be one?
But he is now aggressive and thinks I am pulling a fast one which I am not. I honestly cannot remember who picked it up and when as we have sold numerous very similar items in a similar manner.
I think the issue is he says he wants a refund and it has already been picked up by ??. If I refund I have lost the item, the payment, ebay fees, paypal fees etc.

Sorry no feedback was left on ebay either way. Maybe I should have done but never did. I think like a lot of sellers (and I am by no means a business seller just an occasional seller) wait for their buyers for feedback first.

I am asking you again, what would be a reasonable excuse for someone not bothering to contact you for 7 months-either he's lying or this is a hypothetical situation thread.
I would have said to him" for what reason did you not pick this up, I'm finding this rather hard to believe".
