I decided i was only going to grow container or hanging basket tomato's this year and i have 5 in total all have masses of good size cherry toms but are taking their time to ripen, some are so heavy they have snapped the branches they are on so I taped them up with breathable bandage tape and they are continuing to grow. Only had 4 red ones so far from 5 plants but as they are healthy i plan to keep them outdoor as long as i can to see if they go red.

For next year i want to grow container toms, can anyone recomend a variety that does not grow above 2 ft tall, the ones i planted are not tall but they have really spread.
  • yes mine are just far too much for the container.... may stick to outdoor chillis instead!

I suggest you rethink , plan better support .
In my green house , growing in grow bags with a 5 foot stick . Then I have a metal support horizontally at the height of 4 foot. This is screwed into the aluminium sides of the green house.
When toms reach the bar , more tying in .
Also be brutal with the removing of side shoots and all beneath the first truss.

You're supposed to be able to ripen tomatoes more quickly by exposing them to the gas from rotting banana skins. Never had to because my green house gets load of sun. Worth a try though.

This does work. I put my green tomatoes in a cardboard box in the airing cupboard with a banana last year. They ripened within a week. Perfect. Doesn't matter if the banana turns black.
