Green tomatoes

I have three tomato plants outside layden with green cherry toms. They are in tall thin pots and the growth of them together with wind have made them rather top heavy and spend most of their time on their sides.

I am debating whether to just chop off all the toms and make green tomato chutney and be done with it all!!

You can put your green tomatoes in a sunny window to ripen once picked. I had to do that last year when I ran out of summer! They took their time but all ripened and they tasted fine. I didn't have enough ripen at the same time to make anything but I had enough to eat.

You're supposed to be able to ripen tomatoes more quickly by exposing them to the gas from rotting banana skins. Never had to because my green house gets load of sun. Worth a try though.
Apparently I'm 10 years old on MSE. Happy birthday to me...etc

If you can, plant them in soil next year, it is so much easier, with no watering, and the roots spread more.

Can you use string to attach the top to a nearby fence, or suspend a washing line above them, then attach them to it using string?

  • unfortunately I cant tie them up to anything as there are next to the oil tank. I also have some in the soil but they have been all leave and no flower and hence no tomatoes.... may not bother next year!!

I stick a 5ft stick in the pot to fasten the plant to (old tights work well as don't cut into the stem as wire and string might). Agree with using bigger pots next year, so they don't get top heavy.

For the first time this year I grew First in Field - a freebie sample from Dolmio, they are sturdier and dumpier and stopped at approx. 3ft above soil level - a good sized firm fleshy salad tomato, but definitely not first at anything, my gardeners delights were being harvested at least 4 weeks earlier.
  • mine have bamboo canes and at least one has snapped with the weight.
  • I've just given my tomatoes a major haircut but I'm not giving up hope that the fruit will turn just yet. Last year the fruit were still ripening in October...
:D Skint but happy with my lovely family :D
