Puppy HATES the rain!

Any suggestions on how to make a puppy a bit more tolerant of the rain/wet paws so he will at least stay outside long enough to go to the toilet??!! Turns out our 'lil pup isn't a big fan of the rain, to put it mildly. We literally have to carry him outside, place him on the floor and stand over him while he goes, then he darts back inside in a flash. With British weather the way it is, it could be a big problem unless we can teach him rain isn't going to hurt him! :rotfl:

    Get him a coat?

Dogs are weird, one we had when I was a teenager would happily jump in rivers in January, roll in filthy puddles and loved a bath but wouldn't go outside in a few drops of rain!

I would make rain a positive experience. Get a really fun toy that you put away and only play with when it's raining - but start with short, sweet sessions so you always end on a high, gradually increasing the amount of time he's out there. Keep treats to hand, and when he willingly goes into the garden in the rain, give him a load of treats to reward his choice.

Make going out in the rain rewarding, and you may find him looking forward to getting out to play in the wet weather!

He's 16 weeks old. But this is only about the 3rd or 4th rainy day I can remember us having since we got him. He hasn't had much chance to get used to it yet I suppose! He's being taken on a good long walk this afternoon, so hopefully the excitement of going out and about will override the wet pavement. Everytime we even touch his lead he acts like it's all his Christmases and birthdays at once - he LOVES his walks!! :rotfl:

That's a really good idea, thanks. He loves anything squeaky and we have some squeaky rubber things he hasn't seen yet which would be perfect in the rain.

Yeah Lenny didn't like water or rain at first(being a springer I was a bit worried!!) but he soon found his water legs and now it's a chore to try and keep him out of it! He actually cries at my feet if I stop throwing his rubber ball into the lake/sea/stream.
  • Thanks everyone, that's quite a relief to know it's something common and also something they get over!

Couple of mine hate the rain. When it comes to potty time I shut the door and it doesn't open again until they've been. Once they clicked in that was the case they do their business as quick as they can.

It's in the summer when they dawdle around for twenty minutes looking for the best place to have a poo that I find frustrating now.

Even worse is when they dawdle around whilst pooing, takes ages to find all the little nuggets :rotfl:
