Stag Bar - An ever-lasting treat?

So I decided to buy the two muttleys a stag bar each as a treat to see how they got on with them.

A brave move as little boy dog is terrified of the kongs I got them and wont even sit in the same room as a kong!

Little boy dog will only lick his - no biting, chewing or nibbling - just a delicate lick every now and then and then hide it in the blanket again.

Little girl dog appears to be treating it like a canine catnip: sniff it, roll on it, sniff it, roll on it and repeat ad infinitem.

They've had them a week now but at this rate I think the stag bars may last longer than the muttleys do. :rotfl:

Just a little warning - I have no personal experience of stag bars - howver having read about the dangers of feeding them (causing tooth damage) I have decided not to risk it
Light travels faster than sound - that's why you can see someone who looks bright until they open their mouth.
  • mine have lasted months- dog had an initial good chew, and has completely lost interest. I have tried soaking in water, but will try soaking in stock -is that what oxo juice is?????
  • We have two on the go at a time so both of our two can have one at the same time should they feel like it. They last anywhere from 3 to 6 weeks for us before we throw them out for being too small (we have big dogs, and don't want to risk them swallowing them). How long they last just depends on how much interest our dogs show in them. We've found they prefer them to the bones we got from the butchers, and (to respond to a previous comment) haven't experienced any issues with damage to their teeth. I buy size XL for lab-size mutts.

I did pre-soak mine before they were given out but just in water.

As for the concerns about tooth damage I have read about this but can't see why it would only be a danger with these and not any other hard chew whether natural or synthetic. I would imagine it depends very much on the condition of your dogs teeth - if they have poor teeth and aren't used to hard chews and are the type of dog that will try to bite down hard then maybe yes there is a small cause for concern but why more for a stag bar than other hard treats I don't know.

Anyway as one is just licking and the other sniffing and rolling, I don't think there are going to be any dental problems for my two muttleys!

Our vet has refused to stock these and he has also withdrawn other hard or synthetic bones/chews.

He attended a course which detailed the issues with these things and he was convinced enough of the problems to take immediate action.

Apparently the guideline is that if you can scratch your nail down something and you have something under your fingernail as a result, then it's ok. If you can't, then it's not.

My own personal belief is to err on the side of caution, there are enough dog owner reviews on the net which details damage to their pets teeth that makes me concerned about the wisdom of allowing your dog to chew on these.

The only thing ive ever given my dogs that I have had any concerns about was a pigs ear...

My Spaniel got it stuck in the roof of her mouth and was tearing at her face with her feet in panic, and yes, I was in the same room when it happened...
Please forgive me if my comments seem abrupt or my questions have obvious answers, I have a mental health condition which affects my ability to see things as others might.
