cracked windscreen

hi guys

driving home from work last night my windscreen was struck by a piece of gravel from a workvan travelling in the opposite direction, cracking the edge of the windscreen and leaving a crack apx 10cm across which was just starting to encroach on the drivers vision area.

called my insurance company who booked a replacement using their 'approved' repairer for next wednesday (A week today)

by the time I have returned home today the crack is in excess of 25cm long and is right across my line of vision at eye level.

Called the repairer's directly, who are still insisting on next wednesday and also that if I am stopped then all I need to do is prove that the job is booked and I should have no hassle.

Is that the case? as I have seen all sorts of things on the net and would rather not have any issues with the local constabulary

and before anyone asks, I have phoned my insurers again and also a local windscreen repairer. I'd still be looking at early next week and best part of £300 if I use another firm.

Your insurance are talking bull. It's defective you commit an offence each time you drive it and being booked in is not a defence.

Talk to your local repair companies most of them have contracts with the insurers, you will find one who will do it and if they are struggling you could even offer to take it to their workshop. I am assuming they have a contract with Auto Glass who I just avoid at all costs for reasons such as you have given.

its Autowindscreens that they use, have offered to take it to their workshop and leave it for them to do, have rung round all the ones in the local yellow pages and thats where the £300+ quotes were coming from.

But you get it done on insurance and pay the window company the excess (around £70) so just tell the other companies who your insurer is and ask if they have a contract with your insurer.

If I dont use the one my insurer says, they only cover £150.

I would have avoided unnecessary or long journeys but would still have used it locally or to get to work. But that is not advice, just me.

Then you've got a rubbish or "value" insurance policy. Most will pay out fully on windscreens (with cover) but you'll have to pay an increased excess if using a non-approved repairer.

So if I use their approved repairer, it's an exess, if I dont they'll only cover £150. That means its a rubbish or "value" policy.

Just checked the wifes Swiftcover (I've found them good, changes can be done online free of charge and the renewal price suggests it's not "value" insurance) will only pay out £100 if using a non approved repairer.

Out of curiosity, who are you insured with and whats the excess increase for a non approved repairer?
