Turkish Airlines

Can anyone help me? In June I flew from Mombasa to Istanbul with Turkish Airlines, the flight was delayed which meant I could not get my connecting flight to London. Turkish Airlines did put me up in a hotel for the night but as I finally got to London 19.5 hours later than originally planned I sent in a claim using the template letters on this site.
I received a reply from Turkish Airlines saying that ‘a passenger can bring a claim in the country of domicile or the carrier, or the country of departure or arrival of the flight. Therefore for TK this claim can be brought in England only because the flight departed from this country’.
As my flight was due to fly into London would this make it a valid claim?
Do you know if Turkish Airlines are an EU airline or if Istanbul is an EU airport?
It seems to me that they claim to be Europe’s number 1 airline but refuse to abide by EU regulations.
They have agreed to refund my visa as I had to purchase it to stay in Turkey because their flight was delayed.

Turkey is not in the EU therefore Istanbul is not an EU airport and Turkish Airlines are not an EU airline.
If you were flying into London on Turkish Airlines you do not have a claim. If your delayed flight departed from London (or another EU airport) you may have a valid claim.0
