Poor indoor 3G signal

Please bear in mind that I'm not that technically minded regards smart phones. I have just been given a new Samsung Galaxy 3 which is unlocked, I have also bought the Tesco network (02) sim. My previous Triband mobile on the Tesco network had a strong signal indoors but my new G3 has no signal indoors at all. There's a dirty great phone mast about 2 miles from me which can be seen from my back garden so I would have expected a good strength signal indoors, signal is ok when I move into garden. My question is this, is there any way that I can use my new phone on the old Triband network, I've looked through the settings but can find no way of doing this. Alternatively could I use a Triband mini sim in my new G3 phone.

The networks don't do just a Triband sim
The sims you get are 2g/3g built in to the sim

May be your signal was only good on 2g
3g doesn't work as good as 2g indoors

Also the network mask that you say is only up the road may be a different network EE, T-Mobile, Vodafone, 3

Or it could be your phone not picking the signal up very good.

There is a setting to turn the 3g off on your phone.
    settings/more settings/mobile networks/network mode.

Check to see if mobile data is switched off. If it is, you won't see either an H or 3g symbol. You'll only see the signal strength symbol.

Looked under settings and there's no network mode just access point names and network operators, as there's no indoor signal I just get error while searching for networks.

No signal strength symbol indoors but strength meter and 3G showing outdoors.

The O2 coverage map shows excellent coverage for my area, suspect that you are correct regarding 2 and 3G that's why I was hoping to be able to get the new G3 to use 2G but looks like this isn't possible.
