Hi Jackiehen, It would be better for you to have a prepay smart meter, less bother with topping up. Same price but you can keep a good watch on your usage via the excellent monitor which comes with it, showing how much an hour, in cash, you are using along with how much a day/month and a lot more useful info. You will be able to top up with a debit card at anytime thats convenient.
I havent yet seen a prepaid smart meter in my area, have heard they are installing them in the Leeds area.0 -
Hi. Brit Gas wanted to change my old meter to a smart meter. After reading up about them I decided it would be of no benefit to me at all. I monitor my electricity usage very carefully and don't need to know how much different appliances use, or how much I am using at any one time. Also, the meter would send back data on an hourly basis, which I consider an infringement of my privacy.
I said they could change the meter, but I only want an ordinary one, which they did.
There is a web site which explains all about them.

Hi Ilona, I have heard that the aim is to have the whole of the UK on smart meters. The government issued a report saying not to harrass people into accepting smart meter( at the moment ) but in the end you will be charged yearly metering costs of approx £60 a year if you refuse to take a smart meter. The choice is yours0

Hi. My meter man told me that the plan is for every household to be fitted with a smart meter by 2019. I'll hang on till then. If BG starts charging me before then I will change supplier.

Some people would love a smart meter, that way they wouldn't have to go out in cold and the pouring rain to see how much gas they were using.
I tried putting a web cam in the meter box but my wife complained about the big long wire running from the meter box up the outside of the wall and it didn't work in the dark.
Any suggestions that don't need wires and light.
I do have a monitor for the electric meter.Getting forgetful, if you think I've asked this before I probably have. :rotfl:0 -

Don't get personal, there's really no need for that rant you had - it just makes you look a bit childish.
From the gov't's page on smart meters :

It's another dodgy deal by them with Capita.
"DCC Licence Capita PLC has been selected as the successful applicant for the DCC Licence. The DCC Licensee will manage the smart metering service of its users and will contract with, and manage, the data and communications service providers. The estimated value of the licence over 12 years is approximately £175 million."
I wouldn't trust Capita to look after anything at all of mine.
They got immigration data wrong and harassed people (this year) http://www.techweekeurope.co.uk/news/border-agency-immigrants-uk-capita-103067
The had multiple breaches of the Data Protection Act for people's personal data (this year) in an NHS Trust http://www.ukcolumn.org/forum/health/capita-payroll-mistakes-threaten-%C2%A327m-nhs-contract
They have wrecked criminal justice trials http://www.express.co.uk/news/uk/383219/Judge-s-fury-as-justice-is-lost-in-translation
They lost 'irreplaceable data' from schools http://www.information-age.com/technology/information-management/287036/capita-blamed-in-schools-data-loss
And there are many many other stories of their incompetency. They are not known as Crapita in the pages of Private Eye for nothing...0 -
I don't have a smart meter, however I do have an energy monitor which reads the amount of electricity being used. The only issue is that it reads how much energy the solar panels are generating too!! I would want assurances that the new smart meters won't do the same. I know the current non smart meter doesn't.Paid off the last of my unsecured debts in 2016. Then saved up and bought a property. Current aim is to pay off my mortgage as early as possible. Currently over paying every month. Mortgage due to be paid off in 2036 hoping to get it paid off much earlier. Set up my own bespoke spreadsheet to manage my money.0
