That's a tough question but it would come down to what the workforce wanted in that situation at that time. If these were tabled as options by an employer the union would need to consult their members. Of course there are likely to be other options that the employer has not suggested or even thought of that may be more acceptable to all parties.

    What other options?

Depends on the scenario. Possibly things like debt restructuring, organisational restructuring done in a different way to the proposal, product diversification, selling part of the business, etc.

As I said it depends very much on what is being proposed, why, what type of business, financial position, and a multitude of other factors.

my question would be - is ambulance driver similar enough considering that many thousands of jobs are not going to be an exact match for the job descriptions they suggest

the vehicle i drive provides medically trained personel, medical equipment (defibrilator, nebuliser, emergency drugs)

the only difference is that we dont transport patients

You really don't have anything to complain to them about. If the drop downs didn't give an accurate enough match, you should have went elsewhere or at least called them to check."

i thought it would be an accurate enough match.

"And you realise that ambulance drivers have to be checked for their ability to drive those cumbersome bread vans whereas out of hours doctor service drivers need no accreditation, can drive anything the practice fancies and tend to be out and about in all hours, in a hurry and in a whole host of locations"

ambulance drivers are out in all hours

and why should driving what the practice fancies affect my personal car insurance?

if i dent it or break a wing mirror - how would my insurance company even find out about it ?

i did cause a slight dent 9 months ago - am i supposed to report it to my insurance company?

Thanks, I misunderstood whatever I had read and was under the impression OP was involved in patient transport!

Actually, I'm not sure why the doctors can't just drive themselves, but there we go.

youve got to remember its just pocket money to them. they wouldn't do it if they had to check, restock and carry all the drugs and equipment to the vehicle themselves. they would not risk driving alone at three in the morning with diamorphine on board

if you improve your productivity by 1% in the course of a year and mention this to your employer but they don't increase your pay - should you drop your productivity back to its previous level?

Have you never considered just getting a job elsewhere?

No, you aim to increase your productivity to a more tangible level - 1% is nothing more than a natural fluctuation.
