Most of them rusted and fell to pieces and went to the scrap yard years ago. The ones that were well maintained will now be considered classic cars and cost alot and need lots of time and effort to keep them in good condition.

    Have you ever driven one?

I used to have one in the late 70s and while i thought it was comfortable then...looking back it was a wallowy old thing (wasnt that old). Would you really want one??

Then later in the 80s I like many other peeps used them for banger racing, thats where a lot ended their days

Never driven one. But they're so nice and boxy!!!

And cheap! (compared to a new car!)

    But keep the drawbacks coming!!

I don't know what engine these have but the Escort Chain cam driven CVH engine apparently was notorious for turning the oil into sludge if you didn't change the oil as regularly as it needed to be.

The one I had was about 6 years old at the time and I had to replace the piston rings along with many other bits and bobs but that was the biggest job...

Had the engine out on my mums lawn I recall......horrible job!!!!!!!!

This is also true of many other cars of the time,i remember owning loads and my father did too,he had the original cortinas,2 models before the life on mars one!!,these type of cars are best left to enthusiasts imo.

I've developed the biggest hankering for a Life on Mars style Ford Cortina.

Talk me out of it please! Else I'll be blowing all my savings...
My nephew has one sitting in his neighbours garage (IIRC he bought it a few years ago from neighbours ancient-dad when the old boy's licence was age-withdrawn just before his death) ... I seem to remember it is a circa 1970-Something Mk1 or Mk2 1600 with about 17k miles from new, and I think the old boy was the original purchaser from new.
