I made it clear in the listing that I would be away, I also said that prompt payment would guarantee the item being posted before the bank holiday weekend. Potential buyers were given the information, surely it's their fault if they don't pay up in time.

Unfortunately not as your own terms cannot over ride the ebay dispute time frame. You cannot open a dispute until day 2 and then need to wait to close it 4 days later (so a minimum of 6 full days). There is nothing you can do to speed that up and buyer remains able to leave you feedback and stars , plus put in a non performing seller complaint as well.

Worst case scenario is that you go away with this unpaid, buyer pays by paypal and after a week of not gettin gitem starts an INR claim against you. Paypal refund them and you get all the bad feedback and stars, plus a warning on your expanded dashboard for having a case closed against you .

For future reference a safe margin is to ensure all auction items finish a week before your last posting opportunity. That gives you enough time to safeguard yourself if necessary with a dispute to cancel the sale and stop buyer leaving feedback. A dispute also gets you back all your fees which you have now of course already incurred.

I should also mention that the listing clearly states PayPal or cash on collection only, that is with in the rules, as a seller, I'm only obliged to accept PayPal, so I doubt the buyer has any fall back, they knew when they bidded that they didn't have a PayPal account and that cash on collection was out of the question due to the distance and the fact that we are talking a low value item. We are actually not leaving home until late afternoon on the 26th but the bank holiday weekend is what is hampering the postage.

As long as you have 6 full days between sale and leaving home you can start a dispute. Buyer can pay any time though up to the point at which you close the dispute and you will ened to post it promptly if they pay otherwise they will just do an INR on you.

Buyer can them only close the dispute by paying with paypal.

If the dispute closes without them paying then they are unable to leave you feedback and will be blocked from paying after that date.

  • Plot thickens, they now tell me they did have a PayPal account but cancelled it after having bank account emptied in some sort of fraud. I don't want to start a dispute, is there anyway we can mutually cancel the sale, as for as I'm concerned, they bid on an Item knowing they were in no position to meet the payment terms which was Paypal or Cash on collection.

Sounds very fishy to me. Personally I'd cancel the transaction and resell it.

You can do a 'mutual' (again go through the resolve a problem tab in the drop down menu). However buyer needs to formally agree when ebay send him the link.

Buyer then has 7 days to agree or pay, after day 7 if he does nothing the case automatically closes in your favour and your FVFs are refunded. If buyer actually ticks he does not agree then transaction stands and you cannot open an NPB or reclaim your fees. Either way buyer can leave feedback and stars.

I accept cash on collection or paypal only. From what you have said you made this clear, now after the auction end they want to change this. Reiterate the terms or raise a dispute.

If buyer will not meet your payment methods then you can open a full dispute, that is what it is there for.

If you choose not to do that your only other option is to risk a mutual.

Your only other choice is to just leave it- pay your associated fees and hope buyer just does nothing- buyer though has 45 days to pay if no dispute is opened and has 60 days to leave feedback.

The choice is completely yours .
