Help, for some reason my system restore doesnt seem to be working properly. A while ago I had a Trojan horse, while I was trying everything to get rid of it, including turning s/restore off, I have had probs with it. Ive tried turning it off again then turning back on, but to no avail. I dont have any restore dates on the calender when accessing s/r. I seem to remember, it automatically in puts the s/r dates!. Has any one got any ideas please.
Thanks

Rod

If system restore has been left off no restore points will be created(I expect you knew that) Er have you tried creating a restore point manually Start,Run, (type)msconfig, then OK then launch system restore, then create a restore point then retry what you were trying to do, does that help?

Yeh, only I went thru start, all progs, ascessories , system tools, system restore. Think this is just a different way opf accessing system restore, yes!

Yep Same thing different route, so I suppose create one then see if you can go back to that one after about an hour,-day or week, and if you can you know its worked.

I delete all my temporary files from time to time. I assume this doesnt have any detremental effect on s/r.
I created a restore date bout 1/2 hour ago and its still there, but i've done this before, hence mentioning temparary files

I'd try the following (ensure you have admin rights first):-

    1. Start > Control Panel > System
    2. Within System applet, Click on the 'System Restore' tab
    3. Now tick the 'Turn off the System Restore for all drives' and click apply.
    4. Restart your computer
    5. Follow steps 1 - 3 except UNTICK the 'Turn Off the System Restore for all Drives' and click apply.

This may work but be aware it also deletes any restore points as well.

This is all very strange. As I said in an earlier thread, I created a s/r point yesterday. I have checked it this morning, and hey presto, its still there, great! But I've done this before, (last month), those s/r points are no longer there. Am I correct in thinking that XP also automatically creates s/r points as well.
Thanks for your suggestion bbb_uk. Ill make a note of that and try it if the s/r point I've just made dissappears. Why is it that when your on computers, 75% of the time your just trying to keep the b....y thing going, and the other 25% your ok to use it. oh well

Yes, after a certain amount of time (the default is 90 days) XP will delete the restore points but shouldn't delete anything newer.

You can change (registry knowledge is required though) the elapsed time before another restore point is automatically created (24hours is default), and the life of the restore points (90days). See M$ article on it.

It is possible by messing around with the registry and/or the System Restore registry entries that you could cause serious problems that may require you to re-install Windows. M$ only recommends changing certain things (what I mentioned above), the rest is to be left alone. Only attempt this if you have knowledge of navigating around the registry, etc and only then attempt at your own risk

just gonna check your article bb, but I dont want to over complicate the s/r. Am not a comp expert,(as you have already probably guessed). What if I returned all my settings to default settings. As previously said I turned s/r off a while ago to try to remove a trojan. Seems to be about that time when problem appeared. Not at all impossible that I might have unintentially tweaked a setting or something

I would leave messing with the registry as it is.

Yes, you could try restoring to an earlier restore point remember that something you have installed, etc since that restore point and now could be removed.

If that doesn't work (and if you haven't already) then disabling the system restory, restarting the computer and follow same instructions except enable the system restore as mentioned in a previous post.
