    Did you tell them you still own the house and its on the market? As I understand it until the day you sell the house, you'll be responsible for all charges - and that includes the standing charges for maintaining the supply to the house (even though you don't plan on using it). This is why I suggested moving to one of the few available none-standing charge accounts.

    You can't close the account until you sell the house, you are responsible for all utilities until the house is sold. When prospective buyers look around are you going to stop them testing the water pressure or switching lights on so they can see? Closing your billing account doesn't prevent usage, when your house is eventually bought, you will be the one who has to pay the remaining bill, not your buyer.

    In another 3 months or so, you might need some heating on at night to prevent pipes freezing.
