Gaming PC, XBox 1 PS4 Is It Possible?

Forget inefficiencies and overheads in windows (which will mean the CPU would be spending more clock cycles on background tasks than a dedicated console OS, higher memory usage etc)....
For a giggle... (and bear with me)
Sapphire A3 M MAINBOARD & AMD A300 APU (equiv to a A10-5700) £130
Geforce 660 TI £165
8gb 1600 DDR3 £45
120gb SSD £65
500w OCZ PSU £32
Crappy finger slicing tacky case £20
*no blu ray or OS included
Total £457
So can you build near equivalent hardware for under the £400 launch price of a next gen console? No although not too far off. Would it look presentable in the living room? Nope, and would probably sound like a jet engine.
Just get a console imo!0 -
For games like Fifa 14 and COD Ghost on multiplayer are a dying thin on PC thou.. black ops 2 has less than 30k on line everyday sionce feb... and who want to play fifa on PC... BF4 or BF3 will never die so populer and always full servers... and maps are bigger and the amount players in one game 64 players cant be done on console thou i heard BF4 will have 64 player mode. Bet we see lot of xbox user moaning about connectivity
To be fair, Call of Duty multiplayer dying on PC shouldn't be a huge surprise. CoD is very much a console FPS, and a lot of PC gamers hold up CoD as the poster child for everything that is wrong with modern FPS games.0 -
That's pretty much my exact setup.
First gen i7-920 OC'd to 3.6GHz. Crossfire ATI 6970s that are actually 6950s that were flashed. Largely cobbled together from second hand and older parts and stuck in a shiny new case.
Runs Metro LastLight at 1920x1200 on ultra, so I'm happy with it
I have an i7 920 as well, nothing wrong with that and there aren't many chips that are faster. To test it I have OC'd it to 4ghz and its fine apart from the stupid amount of heat it pumps out, more recent chips are more energy efficient.
But I keep it at stock speed honestly, I've not had need to OC it the only thing I've had to upgrade recently was the graphics card, to a HD 7950 windforce and I havn't found any game it won't play at Ultra yet. It OC's well too I hear.
The last card I had was a 4870x2 bought in 2009, so not a bad lifespan. It still works fine but can't quite keep up with the latest cards on the highest settings and no TressFX. Need to put it up for sale on the 'bay soon.
They're really really good when they come out compared to PCs, then PCs catch and overtake them.
Consoles are never ahead of PC's. They might equal them at launch, but they never exceed them.Would it look presentable in the living room? Nope, and would probably sound like a jet engine.

Depends on the case, and the fans. Mine are pretty quiet.
I've heard plenty of complaints about noisy Xbox's. My old PS3 used to make a heck of a racket on a warm day when the fan kicked into turbo mode. It only seemed to have 3 settings: quiet, Noticeable, and VERY LOUD. Blessed are the geeks, for they shall inherit the Internet.0 -
IMO: this thread has suffered scope creep!
The initial question posted by the OP was: Should I get a PC for my 10 year old, he's mithering about XBOXone Vs PS4.... Can I get better valuefor money from a PC?
The answer is a resounding NO - but not from a hardware grunt point of view.
The Child wants an Xbox one or a PS4. Why does he want an Xbox one or a PS4? Because all his friends will have XboxOnes or PS4's.
the fundamental thing you need to remember is that each system - PC, PS4, Xbox, is a walled garden. Which ever you get, you will not be playing with/against your peers across systems! The manufacturers keep it this way because that is how they drive market share. There is no will in the market to make games cross format compatible, when MS is spending millions on exclusive content to draw players to their console!
So, if you get a PC, you will exclude your son from playing games with probably 95% of the shoolyard. If you get either Xbox one or PS4, then it will likely only be 60% of the schoolyard either way that he can't play with (those with PC, those with the console he hasn't got, those with no games system)
It is ALL about online, it is ALL about the shared experience and it's nothing to do with shiny graphics. That doesn't matter because no one will be sitting in the PC room with him enjoying it.
I think you should get a console. They work out of the box. They use standardised hardware that gets good bang for buck and is compatible. All his friends will have one and this allows competition on a level playing field. It will stop him being the "oddball" at 10/11 years old and allow him to engage with peers on the same footing rather than having to justify his dads decision to frineds while explaining why he can't minecraft on the Xbox server with them (but he ahs an awesome server on PC that his mates can't see or join in on...
) You won't have to upgrade it within the next 5 year+ cycle, and it will play games for that 5 years without driver faff and GFX card upgrades. A £400 Pc might play most games acceptably well now, but will no doubt need upgrades in 2-3 years. Contrast this with spendign £400 on a system that will play all games as they were intended to be played now, and will be guaranteed to play all games for that system in 5 years.
So, I think you should get a console for the sake of your sons wishes. I think a PC may be a far wiser investment in 4 years or so when he is old enough and mature enough to take advantage of it's extra power and customiseability, and also able to use it responsibly and take advantage of the flexibility and power they offer.
Which console you should get is basically answered by "which one do most of his friends have", and I think actually holding off may be a better idea to avoid backing the wrong horse, and possibly taking advantage of price drops after the early adopters have bought. HOWEVER, if the mithering factor is too high, then you may have no choice but to throw your hat in the ring early.0 -
this is an interesting question (that I cannot answer), but I heard a rumour that with the PS4 and Xbox One, gamers can play each other online regardless of which system they are using? This would be new as PS3 and Xbox 360 gamers couldnt play online together.
If the rumour is true (which ive seen nothing confirming if it is or isnt) then why couldnt PC gamers be involved with that..?
The Xbox One and PS4 are using the new game engine, where as the PC is using the old-gen engine. Therefore, until they are both using the same engines, it will not be possible to play PC vs Console.0 -

that would depend entirely on games, there isn't 1 game engine, every game uses its own game engine, many games that are on both console on PC will use the same game engine, it would be pointless making 2 seperate ones
there have been games in the past that have had cross platform multiplayer.
but PC's had an unfair advantage and anyone playing on a console were given no chance so they scrapped the idea for future games.0
