Hi everyone. Thank you all for the well wishes about the job, so appreciated!

Well, I think my plans to go off in the camper are more exciting than paying off the mortgage, so this is where I should focus I think. I still want to look to see if I can do this in 1 years time, which gives me the time I need to plan. As I said, I have to try to figure out how I can pay the mortgage when I have no job. Not sure how the rest of the world do it? I guess they are independently wealthy and so have no need to work, or they are luck to have a job that they can do whilst on the road. I have looked at that before and can honestly say I have no transferable skills that can be morphed into some sort of home working that someone would want, that would generate me an income.

Anyway, I have a year to think and ponder this one. But yes, it will be a series of short trips. So far, I have only done weekends away. Later this winter, I plan to do a 2 week holiday abroad. And then, if I can manage 2 weeks , perhaps move on to 3 if I can get the leave agreed. That's the only thing I can think to do at present. But I will know after 2 weeks if this plan is realistic or not. Maybe 2 weeks is all I can cope with? Time will tell. Looking forward to my short break in a weeks time.

Anyway, I managed to find a bit of money to pay into the mortgage to help it go down, so all is good, and I have managed 2 NSD's in February! Admittedly we are only 3 days in! Everything going to plan!

  • Hi Tahlullah I have spent the weekend reading your diary from start to finish. You are doing so well what with all the curve balls thrown at you on your journey. I moved jobs to one that was so stressful that I gave it up the end of last year. I only worked part time anyway and luckily have a pension I can draw. I had put in to claim it from May so waiting a few months. My husband works and is hoping to finish in 2 years time. We are looking into getting a motor home when he retires we want to travel round Europe. He likes cycling and I go running. I love hearing about your van. Congratulations on your new job. Good idea to focus on your trip away in the camper van. You only live once. Any way best of luck with your plans xx

Hello Mrs Money Penny. Thank you for taking the time to read my diary. I think sometimes we forget where we have come from to reach where we are now, which is why it was important for me to retain one diary covering the numerous years and trials I have been through so far.

Sorry to hear about your job move. It is odd that we have high hopes for work and then we sometimes find that we have moved from the frying pan into the fire. Anyway, you did well staying for as long as you did. I genuinely believe that nothing is worth staying in a stressful job for. Considering how many hours on a daily basis we are there.

I wish you well with your plan to travel around Europe in the campervan. It sounds such an idealistic life doesn't it. If you can afford to travel with no major overheads, then you are bound to have a great time. And planning from now is always a good idea. I didn't realise there was so much planning involved! The very nature of the adventure projects an image of devil may care, drop what you are doing and just go for it! But reality sets in and you realise there are things that need to be done before you go. Like, are you keeping your home? If yes, are you renting it out? If yes, where do you put your truly personal belongings in the interim. If not, can you get insurance as the house will be empty for more than a month. And how do you protect it if it is empty? And how do you ensure that whoever you rent to will look after the house, not damage it and will actually pay the rent and will leave when you ask them to?

Do I sound depressive? I don't mean to, I'm just a realist. Things to contemplate along with how to pay the mortgage. And I haven't even got to what to do with the pets!

Another NSD today and rejoined Receipt Hog in the hope of contributing to my ailing income stream. Did some serious Paddington Bear staring at my bank accounts and in total managed to locate £1k to pay into the mortgage. Very happy with this and so the mortgage is at £68,500 as of today. Every little helps but I doubt I will be able to do that again in the near future.

Finally decided to use the £200 in Top Cashback to help make my car loan payment. Not sure on how much my final wage will be from my old employer, or when my next wage will be from my new one, so thought I would help it along a bit.

Looking at the reclaiming tax paid on the PPI payment. Nothing is easy and certainly is not written in plain English. I guess it is deliberate to prevent everyone except the most determined from pursuing it. Luckily, I have a few days of down time to give it a go! Not a lot due, but every little helps.

New site! No problems negotiating it so far. All good.
Went out last night and spent an extraordinary amount of money that I genuinely do not have available, but I did so in the knowledge that this would be a one off.  Not very MSE at all.  But on the good side, before I went out, I filled in and posted the form regarding claiming my tax back on my PPI payment.  Fingers crossed on that one.
The other thing I did was look at my pensions.  Cannot for the life of me get my head around this easily.  However, I have decided to put all my bits together in Moneybox.  Will see how that goes.
I have a plan, and this plan involves being mortgage free and having a decent level of income to live on when retired!
This will happen before I am 60!
    • Mortgage free
    • Enough money to live on in retirement
    • Go touring in my campervan.

  • Well done on your progress so far, it really will be worth it once you're mortgage-free. I've just bought a house with a £144,000 mortgage for 25 years, I've paid three of my regular payments so far which has knocked it down to just over £143,000 remaining. My plan is to overpay as much as possible, I've just had to let it settle for a few months while I add up what the regular bills will be and finish buying stuff for the house. I think rather than setting up a regular standing order, I'll just move across whatever I have left at the end of the month so that will never leave me short.

I should have quite a bit leftover, so the plan is to only buy what I need with the occasional treat and holiday here and there. When we were saving for the deposit, I had quite a bit leftover that went towards that so I think what will happen now is it will go onto the mortgage instead. A quick look at my disposable income so far shows that I could probably pay the mortgage off around 11 - 12 years early if I really push it, so it will be a while yet but I should get there before I'm 50 (I'm 33 now).

Good luck and you're a lot closer to achieving it than me at the moment.

Hello iampetersmith, and thanks for the positive support.  This is a long road well travelled and I am happy to support you on your journey.  You are lucky to have leftover money with which to make over payments, it will make the process so much easier for you.  And I do believe that aiming for 50 is a fantastic target, especially if you are determined.  I missed my target so many times, its a wonder I am still trying, but its a bit like a dog with a bone.  Once started, you don't feel it is finished until you have achieved that one goal.  I am certain you will get there, you already have an advantage!  12 years will fly by!

Dont think I managed to post a congrats on the new job you must be in demand to get a new one that soon well done hope it is what you want or at least better than the previous one. Campervan trips sound great even if shorter and you cannot rent your house out maybe you could look at Airb& b or something like that for when you are away if you trust someone to keep an eye. Good luck with it all I wouldnt worry about the change of plans many time that is life.
